Look at this shaft

My steering pitman shaft splines looks mashed. Should I replace it?

Re: Look at this shaft

Usable yes, but as readily available as boxes/shafts are I would look for one. Shouldn't be that expensive.

Re: Look at this shaft

That's a twist in the shaft from an accident or hitting a hole, this is fairly common and I see it often in boxes I take apart. The twist will have fractures in it so I'd replace it. NOS ones are around and as said plenty of used ones as well

Re: Look at this shaft

In the manual the same unit fits 1/2, 1. and 1 1/2 ton but the ones for say 1 1/2 to 2 Ton. Weird. Anyone know what the correct part number for a 1/2 ton is?

Re: Look at this shaft

hit a hole?

isn't a hole a void surrounded by matter?

perhaps you did not hit a hole but a whole lot of something?

Re: Look at this shaft

I would, it looks like that truck took one serious hit at some time or at least the truck the steering box was in at the time did.

If we are being that technical then yes he hit the matter surrounding a hole hard enough that the inertia of the vehicle overcame the sudden opposite force and was absorbed in the shaft breaking grain bonds that would normally be present twisting its granular structure.

.

Re: Look at this shaft

There ya go, nos with bushings.

I think I'd check the rest of the steering box over real close to make sure That there was no more damage that you didn't see at first inspection before going further with it though. A hit hard enough to bend the shaft may have damaged other internal pieces.

Re: Look at this shaft

Looks to be longer than the one I pulled. I'm thinking the part number is 3847342 for the commercial trucks. 1/2 Ton should be included.

Re: Look at this shaft

I broke down everything to the ball bearings and checked. Looks good all around except for the shaft.

Re: Look at this shaft

I will use a oil seal in place of the packing when I rebuild it.

Re: Look at this shaft

Post over on oldgmctrucks.com or stovebolt.com. I'm sure you'll come across one quick. Also, there is Tom Myer's in OK (918) 542-3871 (truck salvage) and a guy out in Idaho that is parting out a large number of truck. His name is Gary Severance #208-683-2393. (he has some CL ads in the NW)

I've bought quite a few parts from Gary over they years. He doesn't do email and may require payment via money order/certified check. Great guy, old school and pretty much has anything you could ever need (except hydramatic parts, myself and one other guy bought him out on what he had). Prices are very reasonable, as is his shipping (at cost).

Holes aren't filled with matter?

Technically hitting a hole does nothing. It's when you stop hitting the hole that problems can occur.

Re: Look at this shaft

Found one on Ebay that was sitting on the shelf or in a moist area. Was covered with surface rust. Cleaned it up. No on to the next part needed.
