?

It's out of a floor shift manual vehicle.

I was thinking some sort of key release button but really don't know.

Oh yeah? I'm a Bristolian but moved out just north of Swindon 18 months ago. Loving the quieter life. How long have you been across the pond?

You have to push it down to move the switch to the lock position and remove the key

I was stationed at RAF Greenham Common with the USAF from 1985-88. I'm glad to hear it's still quiet there, that's what I miss the most about the UK.

My 1980 GMC K20 has it. Floor-mounted 4-speed manual transmission.

The lever is used only on floor shifted trucks. Automatics the shifter is the interlock. It is called a ignition interlock.

I was only young at that time but wasn't that when the anti-nuclear protests were happening? I remember seeing it on the news around that time.

Thanks guys, this thread is full of positive enforcement

Re: Trivia time - what is this on the column?

When I acquired my 83 dually, with a manual transmission, the original column had been replaced with a column that had the shift lever removed. I'm guessing it was an automatic. I had that one replaced with the manual shift column. Hence the locking mechanism.
