3speed column shift help!!! 1959

Please help if you can. I want to see if it is an adjustment problem before I resort to pulling the tranny. I rear ended some one and had no visual damage to the truck but my ability to shift into 1,2,3 is intermittent. My linkage seems to bind upon visual inspection but I don't know if it is binding inside the tranny. After failing to shift into 1 I was able to get it back in once and went all the way to third with no problems. After stopping and trying to shift to 1 it would not go into gear. ...any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to pull the tranny unless I have to.

Usually this is a sign of slop in the column or linkage. My 69 does it as,well. It won't do it if I go 3,2,1 skip 2 and it binds.

Thank you mike69! What is the best way to remedy slop in the linkage?
