I can't believe this worked, so I must share
Tearing apart open diff. axle, go to remove pin so C-clips can come out and find the head of the pin that holds spider pin in place sheared off right at end of threads. This is the second time that I have come across this with this axle. First time I just used a magnet, but not this time.
So there was still thread remaining on the pin, I tried catching an edge of the burr and try to spin it out but nope. Considered getting grinder out and cutting the carrier open(replacing with limited slip) but then realized that I had some industrial "super glue", cleaned out hole with brake clean, put glue on end of magnet and glued it to the broken pin inside carrier. To my amazement it worked. I am interested in how others have done this. |

Creative solution none the less, thanks for sharing! Curious as to why the bolt has sheered off twice now though..

This is good to know. That pin breaks and it is a tedious situation

i was just able to spin it out with a dental pick...i'd be real careful with the crazy glue,too big a drop and you'll glue the pin into the carrier...seems to be a pretty common problem...dont know if arp or anybody makes a stronger version of this bolt

Excellent advise. What a super idea. There is a purpose made tool for this. Sold at tomsdifferentials.com under the "Accessories" section "Broken cross shaft bolt remover" part # BCSBR for $29.65. Im curious about a stonger version of the bolt as well. Regards, Bruce

I have use a small reverse drill bit and it will spin it out if it is not too tight or an easy out can be used. This would be an alternative if the glue fails to do the job. Small sets are usually available at Oriley's or Auto Zone and Napa stores .

Strang things happen back there regarding those locking bolts. No real strain on them but some will snap. I had an 85 k5 blazer some years ago that had been driven who knows how long without that bolt in it. I had the truck for several years when one day it stopped forward movement while turning in the driveway. I backed up a few feet, tried it again and it went on. Up till then i had never had the rearend open. Then I opened it to find the bolt completely missing. No broken bits. No damaged gears. No trace of the bolt. The pinion shaft had slid out enough to catch on the pinion gear when i turned in the driveway and stopped it in its tracks. I put a new bolt in and kept driving it. Someone before me had left that bolt out obviously and the shaft stayed in place for a lot of miles.
