Re: Detailing Ron Burgundy - Trials and Tribulations of Restoring 40 Old Paint
jb3t -- I hope the truck stays looking good! Reds were a bit*h to take care of before base coat / clear coat paints. I had brand new metallic red (sorta burgundy) 86 Mustang GT that started looking a little flat after less than a year! I could do the old clean/polish/wax routine and it would look great for a month or two (less in the summer), and then start fading again. Of course, the next model year Ford went to base coat / clear coat. Just my luck.

Yea... I am with you. I am hoping it holds. I don't feel like having it painted. I'll be working on it this weekend and will take some action shots.

MORE PROGRESS - BATTLE ROYALE PART 2
Well, I did not have as much time as I thought I would this weekend. After doing a boat load of yard work, going on a hike with the wife, doing more yard and house work, and throwing down a few frosty beverages with the crew, I could not work on the truck until this afternoon. Firstly... lets to a recap. The weather is finally nice and I was able to get a few good shots. Here's before I did the other site of the hood. Shot #1 shows the blotchy-colored, oxidized paint and tons of scratches. This is the driver's side of the hood. Shot #2 shows the side of the hood that's done (nice and shiny) vs the part that's not done. Last edited by jb3t; 04-12-2015 at 11:02 PM. |

Lots of Elbow Grease
Next up was finishing up the driver's side part of the hood. I washed and clayed and then went to work with the M105 and my DA polisher. Two passes with the 105 (three in some areas). Still had a bit of a hazing issue with the polish (see above post) that I had to get rid of using a micofiber and detail spray as it would not rub off by itself. Used a 5in hex logic pad and also used a newly purchased 4in hex logic pad so I could dig into the nooks and crannies better. The tons of scratches were seriously minimized after the M105. Things looked OK after the M105. Scratches substantially reduced and color way more even. It looked 50X better but I would not say spectacular. Then I went to work with the M205 and POP!... the shine came out. Two passes with the M205 did the trick. Nice and slow, 2x2 areas, back/forth and up/down. It took me about 90 min to do that last half of the hood. I cant put my finger on it but the hood has been a "B". Maybe its a different type of paint (repainted?) or maybe something to do with the heat of the engine. The other panels I have done were not this difficult, but it's done and looks awesome. Here's some AFTER pic. Oh and a bonus... I redid the grille this weekend. Cleaned, sanded with 600 grit, cleaned again, shot it with adhesive promoter, and then 4 coats of Dupli-Color chrome paint. Looks MUCH better. Just need to somehow get the gold bowtie on the emblem back. Last edited by jb3t; 04-12-2015 at 11:06 PM. |

Next Up
Passanger's Side = Down. Hood = Down. Next Up = The Driver's Side. It's very oxidized with small scratches. Will attack that this week. Here's a before shot. Looks pretty good here but believe me... it's dull, dreary, and scratched. Its looks like the hood two posts up. More to come. |

Re: Detailing Ron Burgundy - Trials and Tribulations of Restoring 40 Old Paint
OK People... Ron Burgandy's paint has been full restored. I dont know when we started, must have been size weeks ago but good ole' Ronny looks like he just rolled off the showroom floor. Here is a before and after from the same angle.
The long story is above. The short story is a lot of patience, elbow grease, the right tools, and good technique (that I think I followed well) that I learned from the Junkman2000 and results surpassed expectations. Hopefully it holds out well. |

Truck looks awesome, now with red you are going to have to keep up with it or keep it out of the sun. Without clearcoat you have little UV protection so it will go back to what it was with strong sunlight. Keep it waxed.
The running boards are period correct for the truck and do protect from road chips, but really do look dated to me. What part of the Boston area are you from? |

As for the running boards, I tried to take them off but they are welded on. Will take another whack at them this summer. As for where I am... Up towards Nashua. |

Thanks.... My son told me. I would say that the shine on the truck has faded by 10% in the last 3 months but we actually have not touched it since then, other than a wash or two. We have yet to wax it. It's too nice out, too busy driving it around town. Still looks so much better than before. 100%.

You need to get some wax on it to seal it up. If not, you may get the pleasure of doing all of that again.
