1965 C-10 Ring and Pinion Gearing Change
I have a 65 C10 that Tacks very high on the freeway. I assume it has 3.73 or higher gears in the rear end. I have a powerglide transmission. I would like to go to a 3.08 set up.
Is this a straight forward swap. What do I need to look out for when buying a ring and pinion gear and bearing kit? Is setting up the gears difficult? Thanks , Paul |

When changing from 3.73 gears to a higher gear such as 3.08's you will have to change the carrier. Setting up differential gears requires some special tools and a bit of patience as well as being mechanically inclined.

Changing out your transmission to a 700R4 would be IMO a better option.

Heres the rear diff codes...check the axle tubes for your stamping and it'll tell you what came in it originally

Professional rebuild with parts will run around $1500.
A 7004r installed in your driveway would be about half and would give tons more enjoyment

Re: 1965 C-10 Ring and Pinion Gearing Change
Howdy, I had 3.73 gears in my 70 GMC with a 3 on the tree, I bought some 308 rear ends out of 80s suburbans that were 5 lug for 50 apiece, I liked my rims so I just switched the axles out, was a fast easy switch. Now I got 308s and 6 lugs, no problem. Pics and more info in my build thread.
Hard to argue with a 700R4 though....
