3/4 ton 1971 drum brakes Availability.

I have a 1971 GMC 2500 3/4ton longhorn. It has a Dana 60 rear axle I need to replace my rear Drums. The mechanic shop is telling me that they are hard to find and is going to take two weeks to get the one he could get from his suppliers. The time is not the major issue. but I need two not one.

Do you have any sources of where I can get a set of NEW ones from?

I am looking to keep this truck factory, ie I don't want to convert to disk. I have done some online searching and don't seem to be coming up with the right listings to match my truck, They seem to have up to 1970 and then 73 but not 71. I might be missing here or just typing in the wrong search words...

If I have placed the question in the wrong area pls guide me to the right place. Still learing this sites rules

thanks Steven

subscribed,
I have the same problem, I only need one drum.

I have the Eaton H072 8-lug rear.

I ordered from rockauto only to get one that had 1/4" too much "friction pad area". Every other dimension seemed fine.

Re: 3/4 ton 1971 drum brakes Availability.

Don't know if this will help, but I just replaced both drums on my 1971 Cheyenne Super Dana 60 COIL SPRING. I live by The Dalles Oregon, and use a independent parts dealer. I don't go to "chain" parts store, they are useless when it comes to older vehicles. The invoice I always keep says: ADR 2071 Brake Drum 60296. Try ADR 2071. These are for 12in.x 2 or 2 1/2 can't remember which. These drums are not finned. Going any newer might not work. Yes these drums are hard to fine. The parts store I use had to do some searching, but he found a set, the only one's he could fine! Anyways hope this helps a little.

Sounds good. Good luck, if Raybestos doesn't have anything, always cross reference.

Re: 3/4 ton 1971 drum brakes Availability.

Just got a set for my 72 K2500 from Autozone.

Dana 60 with 12" brakes. 2 1/2" wide.

The books didn't show the right ones but these ones worked on mine.

BUT, they are drilled for 1/2" wheel studs and mine are 9/16. Easy to drill them out larger. Price was low too. Also, they are not drilled for the flat head screws to hold them to the hub. Not really necessary but one can drill for that too if wanted.

Drums: 8903 43$ each
Shoes: 419 17$ set
Get 20% more off ordering them online too.

Had a hard time determining which ones were right. The books all seem to say either 11" or 13" brakes but mine are 12".

Re: 3/4 ton 1971 drum brakes Availability.

The drums you bought are for 1970 and older1/2 in. stud, '71-72 went to 9/16 stud. The "chain" parts store are terrible at finding the correct parts for older trucks and cars. I use only a independent store that uses a wide variety of parts books, more so than "chain" stores. The drums I bought were the correct ones for a '71-72 truck. Drilling them out is a unnecessary step that could have been avoided, if that store did it's research a bit more thorough. Also that retainer hole has to be countersunk, for the flush screw that goes in. Best to find someone with a drill press and the proper countersink.

Yep, I sure as heck didn't expect them to come up with the right part. It was Autozone after all. I just searched their drums online until I found one with the right dimensions. And they were all listed in metric which made it way worse too. Obviously drilling them is a little extra work but it's a very easy job for me. I could have got them at NAPA but they were $90 each and they required that I pay for shipping too which was another 15$. Great that you have an independent store that you can use. Very rural here I have to drive 30 miles to get to a "chain" store.

Re: 3/4 ton 1971 drum brakes Availability.

im kind of confused by everybody having troubles finding them. not saying you guys are incapable but rather the parts stores. i got mine from carquest the next day after i ordered them and many other parts for it. idk about where you live in canada steven, but in the us, napa has 213 of them between their 4 major warehouses in MD,KY,UT and TN. it amazes me how a large majority of the parts store employees have a difficult time finding a part thats not in front of them

Re: 3/4 ton 1971 drum brakes Availability.

The problem is that SOME of the 71/72 GMC K2500's with Dana 60's came with 12" brakes. The parts houses (incl. NAPA) all list either 11" or 13" brakes. None of them have the right listing for this setup.
It's come up several times here. This thread has some part numbers to help too.
Unique problem to a few of us K2500 owners.

I can get most of my parts through the local local NAPA but the parts guy is a wizard compared to any other chain store parts guy I've ever met.

Re: 3/4 ton 1971 drum brakes Availability.

All I really wanted to do here was find a good source for drums. I found in my own research that yes I can find 11 and 13 inch drums and they say that they will fit. problem was I need 12 inch ones. other issue I was finding is that they might have the 12 inch one but only list them to work with coil suspensions not leaf. I also found that a lot of these other online source only had one or are out of stock and don't know when they will or if they will restock

I find that a lot of the parts you other guys find down south are not made readily available up here and these drum fall into that area. I will note that most of the parts I get are imported up to Can from suppliers in the states. making a 40$ drum cost more like $90 to me and if they are wrong I am stuck with them. cause all the different stores chain and independent now make them a special order item. which means I pay more to have it brought up plus the exchange which is 30 per now, and I can't return it. I hate being left with new parts that I have no use.

I dont want to sound to harsh but really just need to know what you ordered and for what truck and setup axle and type of suspension.

so in closing I ordered some and if they fit I will let you all know. if you had direct fit drum pls list them like this:

1971 3/4 ton GMC 2500 super custom longhorn with a dana 60 rear end and leaf suspension. I ordered Raybestos 2071R drum.

We will have to wait to see if they are a direct fit. Unknow at this time July 27/15

ok ok I am done ranting but read that link above it all good info

Re: 3/4 ton 1971 drum brakes Availability.

I'm rebuilding one now. It's been a nut roll finding brake parts. If you use the link above then you should know that there's a typo regarding the self adjuster kits. Thanks to KWrench for clearing it up.

H2555
And thanks also to SpecialK because he points out another typo that the studs are 9/16 and not 7/16.

I'm out here in Calgary, and Scottssuper Trucks in Penhold Alberta has an 800 phone number and you could talk to him about the right drum, my two cents worth
