Help with throttle cable or rod
I have a 68 longbed with a 350 quadrajet and a 5speed (nv3500). The PO literally had a coat hanger bent to operate the cable. I am not sure what type of cable or rod to use. Any advice? I was thinking about creating a throttle rod as I prefer those to cable. I don't know if there will be anything stock since 68s did not come with a 350 from what I understand.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Carb has all original equipment. I am just unsure of whether or not the gas pedal is stock. It does appear to be. |

Re: Help with throttle cable or rod
They originally came with a throttle rod up to 1970. Engine size doesn't matter in regards to what throttle rod. All V8's had the same type of throttle mechanism, but the attachment to the carb may be different. A good throttle rod for your set-up, if you aren't doing a stock build, would be 2 heim joints. They would eleminate any binding. You can Google it or do a search here for some references.
Best of luck. |

I know exactly what you are talking about and I have already thought about it. We run that setup on all of our dirt track cars. I will have to see what you run the carb side heim on or attach it to. |

Re: Help with throttle cable or rod
I have attached the picture of the carb throttle linkage and the second picture is the gas pedal. This particular petal comes into the engine compartment. I guess that is typical for 68. I don't know if that is a stock part or replacement.

Re: Help with throttle cable or rod
You are absolutely correct. Previous owner rigged it that way. I only drove it home and have been working on things slowly as it ran horribly. I was adjusting carb and and running it. Pressed down a little hard and the coat hanger finally broke. It makes sense to me that a rod would be less likely to break.
This truck has quite a lot of work to do yet. |

Re: Help with throttle cable or rod
I put a heim joint on mine. It was a piece of cake and works great. Obviously this is not a q-jet but I would think you could do something similar on yours.

Re: Help with throttle cable or rod
I did mine with 2 heim joints and a piece of threaded rod. Works very well.
You just need to take the cable adapter tab off the linkage and bolt the heim joint to that hole, the bolt the other one to the pedal rod.

Re: Help with throttle cable or rod
Spot on, I used the same setup when I had the earlier cab. The throttle linkage was especially smooth.
