68 GMC at auction

I would like to bid on this truck, but it is a challenge to figure out what it is worth, 68 GMC 2500, 327 with 4 speed, 2 wheel drive, 8 foot box but it has plow and a tilt box, the only rust is under gas pedal where your heel would rest. wood in bed is bad, hood is damaged, front bumper is junk, 1 front fender has a large dent and 1 bed side is dented. Here's the kicker, it only has 18064 original miles. what your thoughts.

Hi Tom,

If it has rust in the floor I'm betting it has rust in the cab supports also. I would get under it with a good light and look at the cab supports and inner rockers. How did you determine that the 18064 miles is original miles? An 18000 mile truck should be in almost mint condition and the bed wood would be in great shape, even in Iowa. Any pictures of the interior and exterior?

Welcome from another Iowa boy.

Re: 68 GMC at auction

I would say the only way that truck is 18,000 original miles is if it was a dedicated airport runway maintenance vehicle or similar unit. Might not have used much salt trying to not rust the planes? If that is the case it could have tons of "hours" on it sit idle with not many miles. Most of the airport tugs never get to 10,000 miles but have thousands of hours sitting idle.
Even with the low miles with the damage you stated I would probably not want to spend over $1500 - $2000. Gotta ask yourself "to get it to the level I will be happy with" what does it NOT NEED?

That one has seen some heavy use plowing and such, but I could believe the 18,000 mile claim. The interior is just too nice. I don't see that one going cheap, even with the dents and such.

Re: 68 GMC at auction

Looks to be decent, I'm over here just south of ottumwa, nice to see more Iowa guys!! One thing i would tell you from my limited experience, if they'll let you look at the truck, and they should if you just drive to to maintenance shed, (you know good ole iowa boys) look over what was mentioned, plus some of those old trucks like that, they drilled holes for wires for salt spreaders and the like, in some odd places, so check that out as well!! good luck on that bid!!

Re: 68 GMC at auction

could be a good project or patina driver. as with pp $1500-$2000. and close look would be a good idea. could go for much more. who knows what someone is going to pay for the right truck. neat old truck either way. good luck

Re: 68 GMC at auction

Man, I really like it, it would make a killer shop truck !! Personally, I would probably go 2500$, if everything checks out alright. But I wouldn't be surprised if it will sell for more, it's just such a cool truck. But if nobody is interested, someone might score big.....

Re: 68 GMC at auction

I don't take anything away from that truck, but be it 18 miles or 18 million miles the condition speaks for itself. It looks like it's been thoroughly used and worked in its lifetime, and surely needs every rubber bushing, grommet, and hose replaced, on top of the metal work. The truth is it will be bid up to whatever someone is willing to pay, but I'd stop bidding at around $11-1200.
