yours is a great start because its turn key. since your asking about tuning performance a engine I can't answer that question because im not a professional tuner. swap heads.valves lots of machine work.ect. .. if u can build it of couse it wil save u money. there are a lot of form out there how to make horsepower gains but it all involves money even a low buget build of 350 will set u back 1k or 2k. If u could find a used engine all ready to go from a tune builder with paper work for the engine on cl or a shop that mite give u the best bang for your buck. dont know how much hp u would like? if u would like a to give it a little more hp and make it a more reliable truck modern (like to day) go with a LS its a comen swap with a big aftermarket.as for trans th350 is fine for Sunday driving cuzin. IMO a performance drag th350 is only go for 700hp that it. if u what more than 700hp for a trans a tow power trans like the th400 is needed. if u just want to up grade what u have now then with a 700r4 it has a OD witch will keep u save gas/ engine rpm will be low and high way speeds. that what im doing im going im going th400 to a 700r4 because Im going to be drive a lot. well I hope that help good luck with your project.
