69 GMC rear brake drum

After owning her for 28 years I decided new brakes were in order. Having trouble locating the rear drums for my half ton 2wd. Drums are 2 x 11 all the way around. Have the fronts that are 3" deep. Rears are 3.5" deep. Local parts houses not having any luck. Any suggestions?

By the way, what is the spring for on the front drums?

Have you tried Rock auto?

http://www.rockauto.com/

NAPA also lists them. Part Number: ND 4401071

Thanks for the reply.

Ya... They both show the 3" deep drums that fit on the front.

They have a deeper "bell" than the fronts where the lug bolts come through.

What did you mean when you said in your first post that the drums are 2 x 11? That is what both of them list....

OK, gotcha...

Do you know what rear end it has in it? I presume it is a leaf spring...

I believe what appears to be a spring is actually a heat dissipating coil to help in the cooling of the drums.....

Looks like a Dana rear. I would think drums would be available for that.... Did you check to see if they can be turned?

Re: 69 GMC rear brake drum

The springs are leaf with over loads. Not part of the drum.

LockDoc - we might be able to turn them but I am skeptical. Original equipment with over 175k. They are UGLY!!

Re: 69 GMC rear brake drum

Take the drums to a local shop. They should have a measuring tool. The ones on my '69 were also original but already beyond maximum spec.

The wrap around spring is for vibration dampening purposes. If not too rusty they can be transferred to the new ones. Not really needed so are not included anymore. Ever been in a shop and see drums & rotors being turned on the lathe? A rubber strap must be wrapped around them otherwise they will vibrate and "sing". Results in a rough grooved finish.

Re: 69 GMC rear brake drum

Sorry swm424... Too many springs. I missed your point.

GRX what was your solution? I am certain that we will not salvage these drums either.

Re: 69 GMC rear brake drum

I got new drums which are not like what you have. Yours are for the Dana 44 rear. Think LMC Truck sells them though not cheap.

Still have not found the right replacement drums for this truck. What are my alternatives?

Re: 69 GMC rear brake drum

I found a solution to my problem. I stumbled onto a thread started by a member with a similar issue. It made reference to a Raybestos 2067 drum. In checking the specs specs seemed to fit with the exception of the size of the lug bolt holes which are smaller than required. With the help of a 9/16 drill bit all is well and working great.
