In bed spare tire bracket
Ok, I have 3 of them now but each are different.
The one on the left is in a 72 Cheyenne parts truck I bought. I thought it might be homemade but judging by the bends on the side I now suspect it might be aftermarket. What say you? The other 2 I picked up today at a junkyard. They were both in the same truck which I thought was odd. It had one on the driver side and passenger side. After taking the pics, I noticed they too are different from one another. (look at the bottom mounting area) So... which are factory correct anyway?

Re: In bed spare tire bracket
Bob,
The far right is the only style I have seen factory installed. The other two are probably aftermarket. Everyone sold these in some form including GM over the counter. The correct mounting location for the RPO P13 side mount spare tire carrier is in front of the left wheelhouse. The location is noted in the assembly manual. The grove side goes in and the lower flange picks up a bedside bolt and adds one IIRC. The crossplate and hole are for hanging the bolt without a tire. When it comes to post factory installations I have seen them everwhere. Mine was left rear. Many are two rears behind the wheelhousings for tractive weight.

Re: In bed spare tire bracket
What kind of bolt holds the wheel original or not ? I have 2 that Im sure were homemade but without a bolt and I plan to use one if my truck ever comes home.

Re: In bed spare tire bracket
Thanks Tim. These were installed wrong then. They had the groove facing out and holes drilled into the bed floor. They were behind the wheel wells on both sides.
No problem on the hijack flashed. I didn't get the bolts with these so am also interested in your question.

Re: In bed spare tire bracket
Spent way too much time on this but here is what I have found,
Bob it looks like your center carrier there is a square body version. This diagram and picture shows the installation and the lack of a cutout at the groove top like the 67-72 have. The wheel bolt, now that was fun (not) and I am done looking until I get a late 72 or even a 71 printing 10-30 parts catalog. Donations accepted and I'll pay the ride. There are apparently three bolts different sizes and lengths to match up to the vehicle. Last is a picture of likely homebrew carrier. Looks pretty good.

Re: In bed spare tire bracket
Interesting feedback on this useful accessory.....mind if I chime in a bit?
I picked one up at the Portland swap meet ($10, removed from a 71'-72') that seems to be identical to the centre one shown in the first post. That said, I also already had one exactly like the grey one on the far left (still mounted in the pic) that came out of one of these trucks. I looked for another one because I think the one on the far left has to be a period aftermarket one and I wanted to go original (or damn close ) Any idea as to where (or if?) the GM part number is stamped on these? Coley

Re: In bed spare tire bracket
If you have a carrier like the center then it is probably a later version and a little too tall. Note the added holes in the first picture. Post up a picture if you want. Had a few of these and my last went as a Christmas gift. IIRC there was a number stamped along the edge of the verticle flange on the inside (facing in on the #2 post picture) but it has been a while. As I said earlier there were many aftermaket factory styles. My IHC has groove in the bedside for the carriage bolt head to slide in.

What color was the bracket painted when factory installed? (body color? Gloss black? or?) Thanks Coley

Re: In bed spare tire bracket
If you have RPO P13 on the SPID it should be painted body color.

Re: In bed spare tire bracket
Sorry to resurrect this old thread. I was looking for one of these in-bed units. There are a few available online but they seem very expensive. LMC truck has one but with shipping and all, it's around $40. I couldn't find anything at swap meets this year so I just fabbed my own. I think it'll be ok. Nothing fancy-cost about $10.00 plus some shop nuts and bolts. Anyway, just thought I'd post it if people were interested.
