Kick panel speaker enclosures

Are all the kick panel speaker enclosures created equally? I looked at some the other day and was surprised how thin the plastic was for $90. Maybe that is the standard but that was the only set I have ever had my hands on. I believe they said these were made in Mount Vernon, TX.

Every plastic pre-made kick enclousure I've seen has been the cheap plastic kind. I wouldn't want to run them as is, I'd want some fiberglass layed over them or something for strength since they are by your feet. I ended up paying a couple hundred for custom wood+fiberglass kicks in my old 79 c10 and they worked awesome. Sold the truck, kept the kicks for future use.

you will need to relocate your high beam switch using the retro sound kickpanels.

I'm really not a fan of these plastic kick panel speaker enclosures. I've been selling car audio for 10 years, and anytime we've done these, with a good high end speaker (Focal 165KRX2 or 165KRC, etc) they do not fit.

However you could easily take these as a template and fiberglass over them, and make them deeper so you can properly fit a good speaker. These from factory are designed to run a crappy $50-$100 basic speaker.

Watch for a future thread when I get a chance to install my stereo and I'll be doing custom kick panels

I made my kick panels out of 3/4" mdf as the base panel and found tin buckets at tractor supply that had the same diameter at the base of the bucket as the speaker opening. I angled the bucket when i cut the upper portion off of it. I then cut slits in the rim and bent them out 90 degrees and riveted these legs to the mdf. I then purchased a gallon of evercoat body filler (on sale for about $18.00) and filled around the outside of the bucket going from the speaker edge to the outer edge of the kick panel to give it a teardrop look, all smoothed out. I chose this method as i have worked with body filler but only once with fiberglass

My objective with the tin bucket and body filler was to give the panel some solid body for the bass punch. I put some fiber fill down inside before i installed the speaker. My mounting screws are hidden inside the speaker hole. I painted the bondo buckets the same color as the inside of the truck

I installed polk MoMo's 6" in the kick panels and made mdf box's holding 10" subs behind my seat pointed up at my back, sitting at floor level. Seat almost rubs speaker face. No amp yet but sounds good to me. My audio ears are pretty picky as i have Dynaco tube amps in my living room driving Klipsch klf 20's

My truck system is a sony head unit indash that can load a cd behind the face as it folds open, i run a remote Sony Minidisc (yes a Minidisc) in the glove box that holds 5 minidisc's. Love the minidisc's for their cd quality, re-recordable, don't skip, can't scratch them, and are very small. No offense here but i hate digitally compressed music being played loud, just sounds wrong.

to get the best sound out of a speaker it needs an enclosure behind it
make your own out of fiberglass and mdf
while these are for my 58 the method is the same for any kick panel

I made my own for 73-87 squares out of the existing kick panel and the speaker pod out of a 2nd gen S series Blazer.


I would love to provide pics, but unfortunately my system got stolen out of my truck last night.
