72 had engine swapped; how to return accessories to correct places?
My 72 GMC had its 350 engine replaced with a crate engine sometime in the 80s, it appears. The alternator is on the left (passenger) side, and I'm guessing other things are in the wrong place now too.
Since the AC is disconnected and missing parts, I want to get it restored & fixed. To do that without a lot of customizing, I need to return some things to their correct locations. Besides the alternator, what needs to be moved? How do you move these things exactly, and where do you get the brackets and other parts to do it? |

You pull everything off the front of the engine along with the water pump and replace with the era correct short water pump and all the matching goodies. Parts can be had in the for sale section or your local wrecking yard if they have a complete

Re: 72 had engine swapped; how to return accessories to correct places?
This is a 72 K2500 350 engine. You'll have to ignore the plow pump running off only the W/P pulley but it does show original alternator and P/S pump. Also w/o a/c the water pump pulley would be a single.
Ignore the small pulley on the front of the crank. It was for the plow pump but I can't use it in this case. With a/c the crank pulleys would have three sheaves the middle one for a/c and it would have the double w/p pulley same as this one. I'm looking for the crank pulley for a/c to properly drive the plow pump. They're not hard to find, came on cars too. I just haven't gotten around to it.

Re: 72 had engine swapped; how to return accessories to correct places?
Just wondering in the upper alt bracket for 72. The original one on my K20 is EXTRA long compared to the one shown above. My brothers 69 and 71 have the short slot version shown above. Both of his are C20 auto/air/A/C, mine is a K20 auto/air/A/C
Is the 72 a one year only piece? Possibly 4x4 only like the steel radiator tube and oil dipstick? Mine is cracked/repaired on the lower portion of the slot and the few other "long" slot uppers Ive located are also cracked or repaired in the same area. Belt listings are 4 inches longer as well. |

I was reading that the long reach bracket was also used on mid 70s short water pump corvettes
Here is a pic of a short slot upper, looks like the arm is the same total length but the slot is smaller |

Here's the 350 that's in my '72 C20 with factory accessory brackets. Not sure if GMC was exactly the same.

Found the actual part numbers and it looks like there is a difference between the 69-71 and 72 only brackets. The corvette version is longer but looks totally different.
69-71 3951338 8 1/2in length 3 3/4in slot 7/8in offset 72 6262982 9 9/32in length 6 1/2in slot 7/8in offset |
