GM 350 Crate Starter Question

For any of you with the GM / GMPP 350 crate motor, what are you using, other than stock, for a starter? I wanted to use the Yukon part from AutoZone, but found it has a staggered bolt pattern, and Jegs stated these blocks use the inline pattern. My engine is still crated and packed, tucked away in the shop that's going to do the swap for me, so I can't verify the inline thing. It will have a 168 tooth flexplate.

Thanks

Jerry

Re: GM 350 Crate Starter Question

A 153 tooth takes the straight across pattern starter and the 168 takes the diagonal.

Your block should be drilled/tapped for either one.

I recommend the Remy gear reduction starter from Rock Auto, part #96206 for 168t. It is the starter used on the '97-98 Chevrolet trucks.

I am speaking from experience, they work good. Cost is around $100

Thanks for the lead and the part number, Jake. That's a whole lot less than AutoZone wanted, and would have had a core charge and tax on it as well.

I've been fooling with Chevy engines for ages, but never realized the 153/168 thing was so simple, so far as starters. Learned something new!

Re: GM 350 Crate Starter Question

Hitachi makes a high torque mini starter for small block Chevys which gets good reviews from the racing crowd. I have one on my 83 454 and it works better than the genuine GM high torque mini starter (red bow tie) I had previously installed. My problem is heat soak, so not as big an issue with a SB, unless you have headers.
