engine noise

So my engine has not been started in about a year due to putting her back together and Re wiring. When I started her there was a taping sound. It sounds like something bouncing inside the value cover however, everything looks fine inside. Also when we tried to rotate by hand it seems to get hung up. We back it off a few times then it rotates over. Any suggestions of what it might be would be great. I am planning on pulling the engine So I can dig deeper just seeing if anyone may know.
