66 power steering Question during mod
I'm almost done with the power steering mod on my 66. I used Captain Fab's bracket and all the parts new/reconditioned from a 74. I have everything installed but I'm having a heck of a time getting the pitman arm attached to the steering linkage. Looking at it, it looks like even if it was attached it would hit the crossmember. I looked at a bunch of the old threads and the pitman arm looks like the correct one. My first thought was that I had the wrong pitman arm.
SO, any ideas, suggestions, tricks on how to get the pitman arm attached to the steering linkage? I unhooked the linkage from the drivers side front wheel but it still doesn't look right. I dont' want to force it, when I force things they tend to break.

Re: 66 power steering Question during mod
If your not, use the pitman that goes with the 74 stuff not your original style. I also used the crosslink from my newer stuff so I could use the tie rod ends for the newer spindles/steering. I do know the Pitman arm took some persuasion to get off and back on. are a pain to get on. Also if I remember, it only goes on in one position, but I cannot swear by that. IT has been a while since I did mine.

Yes, I'm using the pitman from the 74, it's just so tight it doesn't feel right. Everything else looks great.

Re: 66 power steering Question during mod
Of the hundreds of steering box adapter plates I have sold, just a handful of customers have had the pitman arm contact the crossmember. None of those customers have let me know what the solution was. I have not had an issue with the few that I have personally done.
To my knowledge, as long as the steering box is positioned correctly, the pitman arm should bolt up to the draglink and not make contact anywhere through it's swing. Can you post a pic of what you are experiencing?

Re: 66 power steering Question during mod
Let me go take a pict to post. The power steering box is mounted exactly per the template, I measured three times and cut once. It might just still be me not knowing how to get it on right. I'm going to start this morning and take some more things apart to get the pitman arm connected and go from there. I'll get pictures up asap.
Thanks for the replies.

Re: 66 power steering Question during mod
Ok, I jacked up the front end to relieve some pressure, got it to align and it fell right in. See, I just didn't know what the heck I was doing
Captain, your template was perfect. I'm very happy with the kit you sold me. All I need to do now is go get a belt and some power steering fluid. I can't wait to drive the old gal now.
