Vince, sounds like a collection of overdue maintenance issues. What truck do you have? Trailing arm rear or leafs? Coil front suspension or torsion bar? GM's beat Ford twin I beam IMO, so you have the potential at least for a better ride than the Merc.
Power steering upgrade makes a huge improvement, too.

`65 was the first year for Fords, maybe not for Mercury. I just assumed.
