a/c or no a/c???
i'm trying to decide if i should keep my a/c stuff.
will the compressor handle the engine revving to 6500? also, how much power does it take away having it on there(running and not running) i kinda want it go just so its cleaner under there. and for the extra power |

a/c or no a/c???
Most older vehicles a/c compressor will not last at 6500 RPM's. In the late 60's the muscle cars (GM) with the solid lifter engines and 6000+ RPM levels did not offer a/c as an option.
I took mine off of my 86 GMC to save space, etc. I will not use it since in the summer I would rather hear the exhaust sound. An older a/c compressor probably eats up about 15 HP in my opinion.

DCraner, i'm seeing 1 flaw in your logic. how often is Eric going to be racing his truck with the AC on? and how often is his 350 going to see 6500?

a/c or no a/c???
I assumed from his post that he will have a 6500+ RPM engine, and when "free wheeling" when a/c not on they do sometimes burn up the clutch mechinisim, etc., and at least throw the belt.
Just my opinion. Thanks.

I agree....If Eric plans to run quarter mile runs at each light, I'd be worried more about how long the engine will last. Keep the air and turn it off when you burn rubber.

I have a v-belt for the alternator and it fly's off pretty easy. Normal driving no but getting in it fly's off. I need to get the wide pulley setup off a newer truck like DCRANER. Why they are so off center is beyond me as to why they are setup like that. I have seen plenty like mine that aren't lined up like that should be. Its a good 1/4-1/2 inch off.

Keep the A/C, especially if it's going to be a daily driver. Besides, the ladies like A/C!

Ditch the A/C...more power and less weight. Also, easier to work on the engine with less crap in the way.
What do you think windows are for?

eric i dont have A/C but believe me when i am on my way to work with black pants and dark shirt on i regret it. and besides, think your girl would want to ride in it if she is going to sweat everywhere youll go? if you want to be the only one to ride in it... ditch the A/C... you are in the wrong state for no A/C and to be comfortable.

I ditched mine, and believe me, it's hot on 100 degree days. But, to me, a hotrod isn't supposed to have AC. My wife wont' ride in my truck in the summer, much less drive it. But, that's perfectly fine with me.

if i do remove it, what all goes about doing it? just unhook the compressor and the hoses? do i have to worry about the freon at all? what can i use to cap the line to the radiator and the a/c box on teh firewall?

If you remove it, do it the right way, and shave the firewall. Leaving the blower motor and etc. installed looks stupid, IMO. You've gone this far, what's stopping you?!
