Dimmer Switch Rod
I have a simple question, is it possible to replace the high-beam dimmer switch rod on the steering column without dismantling the entire column? I had the column apart yesterday, and re-assembled plus installed it in my truck, before I realized the rod fell out..
Feeling really stupid, and really don't want to have to disassemble it again. Thanks!

No, on the back of the column under the dash, there are two medal rods, one goes down to the ignition switch, and the other goes down to the dimmer switch. The one going to my dimmer switch fell out, and prevents me from switching between low, and high beams. To many people it's not a big deal, but where I live we have no street lights, and high beams make all the difference.

ON my 89' the switch that the rod goes into, should be screwed onto the column. I replaced my switch that the rod goes into and was pretty easy to swap out. It's adjustable a little bit to put enough tension on the switch and rod to work properly.

I have a switch, but my rod fell out of the steering column, and I'm dreading having to take the column BACK apart, trying to find out if there's an easier way.

I think it just sits in a pocket and you should be able to get it connected without pulling the column apart. May have to take the heating duct work out just by the pedals but otherwise, OK.

I've got a rebuilt column in my barn I'll look at tomorrow and see what it takes to put it back in.

Your going to have to take the top bowl lose, not totally off. Just unscrew the turn signal plate, pull it up and out of the way. Remove the screws for the top bowl and pop it up so you can snake the rod down through.
I use to rebuild thief recovery's on GM's and Jeeps with Saginaw steering columns. I have boxes of mics. parts and lock cylinder parts. If anyone is into rebuilding lock cylinders I have a bunch of lock wafers and springs. I would be willing to set somebody up. Ken

I looked at my rebuilt column and I can't see how the top of the rod connects because the shift lever housing is in the way. Not sure what you have to do to get to the top mounting. Sorry
