LS oil pan question

I have a 1970 CST-10. I will be installing a 2011 LS 5.3 from a 4x4 1500 pickup. Will the stock oil pan work or should I get an aftermarket pan such as the Holley unit? I want the engine in the stock location if possible. Also who makes the best fitting motor mounts and headers? Thanks, Randy

The engine will come with the pan so, try it and see if it fits. The Holley pan should work and so will the MAST performance pan. They are rear sump and both should fit but they are too pricey (~3-500) to buy ahead of time only to find you just don't need it. As for headers, I use Sandersons but, as you will soon discover, opinions on headers are like noses; everyone has one and they are all different.

Re: LS oil pan question

I used gm musclecar pans on mine . gives you a couple inches clearance over stock truck pan , a holley pan is expensive and not needed

Re: LS oil pan question

Depends on which position you use to accomodate the LSX motor. On mine I opted for the LSX to fit in the stock SBC location. The stock oil pan fits nicely with probably 2-3" clearance but my truck a 2WD (1972). The headers (no name brand) fitted like a glove, no clearance issues whatsever. I got my motor brackets off ebay and it was the non-adjustable kind. One issue I ran into is that one of the bolts on each side had to be grinded about 1/8" as it was bottoming down on the block. There's always something when you doing conversions :-).

Re: LS oil pan question

Might check out the "Dirty Dingo" motor mounts. They are adjustable. Wish I would have had them when I put mine in my Chevelle.

Re: LS oil pan question

using the stock truck pan or even the muscle pan is fine but these are deep pans and may hang below the crossmember , so it will be exposed to a direct hit if you run over something. As suggested use the holley pan or mast pan. you might even be able to use a f body pan also.
good luck either way

Thanks guys for all the info, I'm trying to learn as much as possible before I start this project. This will be my first LS swap. Any other advice you might have would be greatly appreciated. Randy

X2 On the GM Musclecar oil pan fits even with the frame and I highly recommend Dirty Dingo slider plates.

Re: LS oil pan question

I used the stock truck pan with the engine in the stock location relative to the transmission. It's a little lower than the crossmember, but clears everything nicely.

I used homemade adapter plates (if I were to do it over again, I'd also put in the '73-up engine stands for more clearance) and 2010 Camaro exhaust manifolds.

Re: LS oil pan question

If you plan to c notch the rear frame and lower the front 5 inches , [lay frame truck] ,you should get the holley pan[about $400] , If you are planing a 3-5 or 4-6 drop truck the musclecar pan from gm [about $200] is recommended , stock truck , stock truck pan is fine , but will hang below front crossmember about 2 inches .

lots of info here http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/f...play.php?f=206
