Fender "backing nuts". How are they attached?
Reinstalling my hood brackets onto the fender, and one of the square nuts on the inside of the fender broke free. From what I can see, there are no tack welds on any of these nuts. Only an indentation on each side of the nut. Anybody know how these originally were "stuck" to the fender?

They were spot welded in the stamping plant body shops...

Technically it's a "projection weld" nut.
There were little nubs on each corner of the weld nut where the current flowed and the welding occurred. I agree that these were installed at the stamping/fab plant, not at the vehicle final assembly plant. K
