Re: converting 6 lug to 5 lug.

Well, if you dont want to run billet adapters, then a disc-brake conversion for the front, and rear axle swap will be in order.

Re: converting 6 lug to 5 lug.

As NF65Fleetside mentioned, there are 5-lug conversions. And, if you're as stubburn as I am and want to run a vintage set of wheels that have sentimental value (I had them since before I could drive), you can have new axles cut and drill out the front rotors like I did. I should explain...I couldn't find a 5-lug conversion with a 5 on 4.75 (small GM) pattern - everthing was 5 on 5. My vintage Ansens are 5 on 4.75. Anyway, being impatient and frustrated, I went the extreme route, drilling out the rotors I wanted with the 5 on 4.75 pattern, pressing the studs racing studs and fabricating the 6-piston caliper mounts.

Re: converting 6 lug to 5 lug.

Might consider a front crossmember swap from a 73-87. That would give you the 5 lugs your want with disk brakes and coil springs up front. Then just a rear axle swap in the back. Really easy swap from what several board members have said.

Re: converting 6 lug to 5 lug.

I put a complete crossmember from a 74 chevy truck halfton under my 62 pickup to get rid of the tortion bars. Got everything from rotor to rotor at a salvage for 125 bucks, the only thing i had to do was drill two more holes on each side, other than that all other holes lined up. Had been driving every day with that setup for 3 years. It will work for what you are wanting to do. Hope that will help you

Re: converting 6 lug to 5 lug.

Scott,

I have a '62 also, just picked up the xmember from a 77. I'm dismantling it now, cleanup, paint, bushings, etc. and will do the install in a couple of months.

Do you have any pictures of your installed crossmember (or better yet, pictures of the progress)?

TIA

Well that's backwards from what everyone else is doing. I'm assuming you already have disc's up front? Probably the easiest would be to go with the aftermarket 6 lug front rotors, although you may have to change your spindles....don't know for sure. As for the rear end, you should be able to find someone to swap you complete differentials. Your 5 lug for a 6 lug one, since your 5 lug is sought after by those wanting to convert to 5 lugs.

Re: converting 6 lug to 5 lug.

Well looks like its been a couple years ago since this question was asked so I didn't see any but is there a bolt up 6 lug adapter to a 5 lug ? I guess the rim would have to have a different backspace. In order to sit in where it should. I'm personally not ready to swap cross members yet ...lol give me time

Re: converting 6 lug to 5 lug.

You don't have to swap the whole crossmember, just the balljoints, Spindles, rotors, etc. Unless you have a '60-'62, then you have to swap the whole crossmember.

I don't know of any 6 lug to 5 lug adapters available.

Did you have to take all your body panels off when you did the swap. This is my first truck and I'm only 16 so I'm worried if I take it all off it wont get back together
Thanks
