power steering questions?????
i have heard that there are 2 different types of power steering boxes, one that the lines have an o-ring and the other with a flare line.
how do you tell the difference in the p/s box, and what years were each made. the reason that i ask is because, i wanted to put the power steering on my truck (70 chev), it had a straight six w/ps but all of that is gone now.... so i can't look at the old hose. i have put in a small block chevy and i am using a long water pump set up, and have a p/s pump core off of an 80's truck. was really wondering what years the different types of p/s systems were made (years) and how to tell the difference by looking at the p/s box. i really don't know if the p/s set up on my truck was org. or not, when i got the truck thanks for the help tommie Last edited by tommie; 02-17-2004 at 11:53 PM. |

I'm unsure of the exact year GM switched to an "O" ring style line. I am pretty certain if you have a pump from the eighties, it will be the "O" ring type. For some reason, 1977 or 1978 sticks in my mind as the date they changed. You can look at where the line fitting hooks into the pump. The ones that are the old style with the inverted flare fitting will have a small upright cone shape machined into it. The other style will not. Maybe there is another member that could explain it a little better.
