door locks on my 72

Since I only received 1 ignition key when I got my truvk, and since I don't trust the old owner, I thought I would get new locks all around. The ignition lock was done in seconds. The driver door lock had to be completely removed to free up some parts. After putting it all back together, the new lock works great, well almost. It will lock with the door open or partially shut but not if closed completely. Suggestions?

Re: door locks on my 72

Are you saying with the door closed you can't lock the door? if they won't lock using the key with the door closed make sure the lock paw is orientated correctly. I included a pic of the inside of my driver door showing how it should be orientated.

On my 69 Burb I have to close the doors and then I can lock them. If I lock a door and then close it it will unlock.

I'll recheck that. It will lock with the key or the slide rod when open or closed but not tight. Once it's closed tight, neither will lock it. Thanks for the reply.

I'm interested in what you find out. Mine will lock when open unlock when you close it and then can't lock with it closed without pushing and wiggling the door around.

Mine too. Seems it has to do with the lock catch on the door frame. I've adjusted it in, out, up and down it had made a slight difference. Need only a minor push on the door to lock and unlock. Too hot to do anymore today. I'm doing an oil change first thing in the morning then I'll an spend some time adjusting it till I see what works best and let u know.

Use some PB Blaster or similar on the door lock and latch first. You can get to it through the window channel with the window rolled down. If it still doesn't want to cooperate try moving the striker plate out a bit. Be sure and mark around it with a fine felt tip marker first so you can tell how far you have moved it. Only go about 1/16" at a time and don't let it move up or down, just out. It shouldn't take much if that's the problem.

I've had the lock out and it's freed up. It works great until it's against the striker plate. Then u have to push in a slightly and the lock works.

Your door latch is worn out. When worn, the door will lock if you push on it while turning the key. See post #23 here: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...door+wont+lock

This is the intended result to keep one from locking their keys inside. Every 70-72 truck my family has had worked this way. Im sure the 67-69 worked this way as well but i have never had personal experience with them.
