Looking for Corvair-95 Exception Control Letter info
Hello all,
I'm the webmaster of the Corvanatics (Corvair-95) website and I'm working on decoding the exception control letters for 1961-65 Corvair-95s. Please visit the Corvanatics website -- we have posted an incredible range of information about the Corvair-95 pickups and vans (and other Forward Control vehicles), including over 100 pdf documents. The URL is http://www.corvair.org/chapters/corvanatics/ . While exception letters were only used with the vans, I am hoping that someone may have pertinent information within their collections of documents for other Chevy trucks and vehicles. Most valuable would be assembly plant Exception Control Letter Sheets; however, other documents with information about which options are associated with the different exception letters would be very helpful. This would include build sheets, window stickers, etc. If you own a Corvair-95 and would share the paint and trim codes, these are helpful as well. I could use the VIN as well as the paint and trim codes, which are stamped on a plate on the cowl wall alongside the steering column. If you have something that you could share please feel free to send PM or contact me at spilatrs@marietta.edu. Thanks. Steve |

Re: Looking for Corvair-95 Exception Control Letter info
Forgive me for asking, but - what is an "Exception Control Letter"? I didn't find them on your website.
I have been building vehicles for GM and playing with RPO codes for almost 4 decades, including writing/approving some of the Truck Data books; I might be able to help or share some insights if I had a better feel for what you are looking for. K

Re: Looking for Corvair-95 Exception Control Letter info
Exception Control Letters are one or two letters that follow the paint or trim codes. For example, paint codes may be something like 505A, 554AB, 743F, 5521BB, etc. Examples of trim codes of the vehicles outfitted with the custom features RPO are 431A, 431C, 5Z60JA, 5Z60JB, etc. (where 431 and Z60 were the custom feature RPOs for different years). The exception letters are the last one or two letters (A, C, JA, JB, JC, JD etc), and they indicated other options on the vehicle. I know what many of these are, but not all, such as the A, B, C & D, that follows the J in the example above.
Thanks for any help |

Re: Looking for Corvair-95 Exception Control Letter info
I have moved this into an acceptable forum area. Corvair pickups are not the focus of this forum. Alternate Tinkerings covers most everything that is not part of the focus of the forum and site.
I hope you understand why this was moved. Thanks for your understanding.

Re: Looking for Corvair-95 Exception Control Letter info
Thank for the reply; none of the programs that I have worked on (or researched as a hobbyist) have used those.
Sorry - K

Re: Looking for Corvair-95 Exception Control Letter info
Keith,
I believe that most of these codes were used by the St Louis assembly plant; for some reason the Flint assembled vehicles lacked the exception letters. Do you know why they would have been used at one assembly facility but not the other? Do you know anyone who might have a connection to the St Louis plant? Thanks. Steve |

Re: Looking for Corvair-95 Exception Control Letter info
Yes - the plants had variations in build processes, and differing "personalities", that could result in the use or dis-use of additional codes.
I launched product in the St Louis plant right before it shut down but I suspect those guys are all gone. The youngest person there at the time had 33 years seniority (and that was 25 or 30 years ago). K
