Front bumper, powder coating a good idea?
I have my front bumper off and man does it have some paint runs! I don't know if my dad did that or the painter he hired back in 1990. Anyway, I was thinking about getting it powder coated, what do you guys think?

Depending on where you get it done, a little more coin and you can get a china chrome one.I will say powder coat is stronger than paint, but not blastproof! I can't recall the color of the truck or bumper,I've slept since then.Sand and rattle can works good also (cheaper).

Let me correct myself. A little sanding and a rattle can. proof reading helps. LOL

Paint is good. Powder coat is good. You can paint it yourself for cheaper. It's not a good idea to powder coat a bumper when you do it and don't know why.

If your wheels are painted, I'd paint the bumper. If wheels are PC, well, then I'd PC the bumper. Assume wanting to keep it all original looking. Keep in mind that while PC is more durable, it's also not as easy to repair a chip or ding as a painted bumper.

If your PC bumper gets chipped up, it will have to stay chipped up until you strip and recoat. If you just leave it in paint, it can be touched up as you wish.

Re: Front bumper, powder coating a good idea?
like red line says. key is who does it and how well. I've seen karap where painter powdered right over grease and rust. I seen jobs done very well and looked like jewelery.
I have seen powder coat that flaked off in my hands.and that which was pretty much bullet proof...literally. shop quality |

If it's chrome under the paint powdercoat won't stick well

Re: Front bumper, powder coating a good idea?
I might should have been more clear. Painted bumpers, OEM, no chrome.
Hmm.....can't just touch up powder coat with paint eh? I guess that settles it, PAINT IT IS. Thanks Is it safe to sand blast the bumpers? Thick enough metal? |

You can touch-up powder coat chips with a dab of paint.

Re: Front bumper, powder coating a good idea?
So would the original color of a painted bumper be "gloss white?"

Re: Front bumper, powder coating a good idea?
If you are going for OEM color, probably should paint. There should be a color code for that "white" paint.IMO I would powder coat. If you powder coat you can get close to original, unless you want to match exactly it might cost some dough. It amazes me how many shades of "white" there are!!!

I know powder coating is incredibly durable. I used a piece of 3/16" steel I found in a dumpster (can you believe what people throw away?) that was powder coated to make some tubing. I could not get that stuff off with a wire brush on a grinder! |
