period correct plates

hey y'all. was wondering if anyone knows of a good vendor for period correct license plates. im in NY...already have my truck registered and insured "historical", so its pretty straight forward to handle the paper work and the small fee with the DMV... so i looked on ebay..not much to choose from right now... since in NY, a 1957 plate has the number 57 stamped in the lower right corner....
i was talkin to a fella at the gas station with a 1960's muscle car and his period correct blue plates with yellow letters was sweet!

heres a 57 plate

Re: period correct plates

You just have to hunt for them. I'm not a fan unless the truck is 100% restored to drive it off the dealer's lot the day it was new right down to the correct tires but to each his own.

There are usually vendors at swap meets that sell nothing but old license plates, There is always Hemings and don't forget those dusty antique/junk shops.

Here, this took 30 seconds of searching for 1957 New York license plates on Google. Ebay number put it in the search 121556172484

Those are commercial plates and you won't find much nicer ones that have been

Re: period correct plates

Most states have a process for using year of manufacture plates. In Idaho dmv has to certify plate number is not in use and you pay the same fee as a vanity plate. Plate has to be in good shape and readable.

Same here in VA. If the numbers are already in the system, you can't use it. You might check your state's DMV website to see if you can apply for a vanity plate online. If so, put in the plate that you're looking at to see if it's available before purchase.
Also, here there are vintage plates on Craigslist daily.

Keep your eyes on Ebay and Craigslist, they pop up occasionally.
I knew someone who had set of plates from the 50's who split them up, and I was pissed because I knew somebody would need them for a classic.

Here is what I'm looking for...

Re: period correct plates

Yeah.. check state laws. Some states will not allow repro's. NH allows originals to be displayed on the front only, with a permit. When I went to the DMV office in the capital to get the permit I was told I had to return to the same DMV office every year to have the plates inspected by a DMV employee who will ensure they are clearly legible. I decided to pass on the plates. That's a retired man's game.

Re: period correct plates

Here in NC they do things a little differently as far as using dated plates. None of the plates are in the system so you just bolt it on and go. You must produce your original registered plate upon request.

Re: period correct plates

I got a couple of sets from this guy. Alan Betts in Portland ,OREGON 503-761-2223. He collected over 1000 plates about 30 years ago and started selling them. He is a nice guy and prices are fair. I checked the numbers through AZ dmv to verify good usable numbers. Some were not usable but I did get one for my 55 truck. hope this helps.

Re: period correct plates

Hey guys was poking around NY's DMV page to see if you guys had a legacy program like we do out here in Cali, (Just started printing black plates only) and I found this:
What are vintage plates and what vehicles are eligible?

Vintage plates are the actual plates issued to the vehicle owner, or other original plates (not reproductions) issued by New York State, in the year the vehicle was manufactured. 4

Any motor vehicle manufactured more than 25 years before the current calendar year that is used only as a collector's item or exhibition piece, and not for daily transportation, may be registered with vintage plates from the model year of the vehicle.

Vintage plates are optional, and their registrations are valid for one year. 3

Learn about pricing and how to apply for vintage plates.
http://dmv.ny.gov/learn-about-histor...vintage-plates

You may not be allowed to be driving with vintage plates if i read this right. Just want to save you some grief if possible.

NY DMV doesn't enforce this rule. Also, restored and/or repainted plates aren't allowed..

Took me 4 years to find this original beauty. I wanted one from a rural county, not urban area. I also have a little rougher back up.

yeah, my insurance company said as long as its not a daily driver, I could get the historical insurance, which is a fraction of regular car insurance.

I never really thought about vintage plates until I ran into a guy at a gas station last week and noticed how good his plates looked.
