Transmission Question
1971 C10 Short Bed 250 CID engine, only option is heavy springs and Posi-traction. I recently acquired a rebuilt 327 that has been sitting for awhile but was properly stored covered and oiled (no corrosion) professionally rebuilt. I got it from my friends brother so i trust the info, what hecan remember! It is a '67 block.
In the engine deal I got the rebuilt engine, new Edelbrock Intake an Edelbrock 600 CFM Carb (new) as well a chrome plated alternator, Hedmann ceramic coated hedders a TH350 auto transmission which I do not know the condition of and a hurst shifter for $2200.00. The TH350 looks great but it would cost $350.00 to get inspected and put back together. So the real issue is do I use the standard three speed or take a chance on the TH350. No one here in town has a transmission test stand they would have to disassemble, it's too old to scan. My transmission question is will the stock three speed on the column handle a 327 Standard CAM. Thanks in advance for any assistance! |

Re: Transmission Question
Yes, it will easily handle the 327. In fact, it can and did handle the highest hp 327 that was offered from Chevrolet, the L76 (365hp) and the L84 (375hp).

Re: Transmission Question
it is not a BOLT IN N GO conversion to go with the turbo350 as you need to dump the old crossmember then get a automatic crossmember and then there's the linkage for the shifter and the driveshaRT MAY NEED ADDRESSING TO

Re: Transmission Question
Thanks CDowns I was aware of that. I think I have decided to stick with the 3 speed just building a daily driver and the three speed is in great shape and the TH350 is an unknown and a possible additional expense.

Re: Transmission Question
Looks like the switch to a SBC from the inline will require some changes at the linkage mout to the engine. I work in a machine shop so I can make and weld pretty much what I need. Made a plate to lift the engine today from stainless.

Re: Transmission Question
Flywheel is different and IIRC the towers are in a different place for mounting the engine. You're not going to have very much distributor room because the 6 cyl engine placement puts the engine close to the firewall, so if you want HEI use a pertronix or something like that and keep the small cap.
