4L60E Conversion

I'm having shifting issues with my 700R4 transmission. Since I plan to do an LS swap in the near future I'm considering 4L60E transmission now. I can get the stand alone harness/computer but what else will I need? Does it bolt up? Someone told me I may need to use the 700R4 torque converter. Any specific year work better? Knowledgable input would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 4L60E Conversion

I have a TCI-EZ TCU controller, has worked flawlessly for years. All you need is a throttle position sensor and hook up the supplied rpm module to get it up and running. If you go LS then you just hook into the factory LS harness. I have a complete build on here with my install. You will use the 4L60 converter.

Re: 4L60E Conversion

I would talk to tci or a trans company see what they say will work and won't.

Re: 4L60E Conversion

A 700R4 is a 4L60 and was used from 82 to 93 then they went to a 4L60E which is an electric shift 700R4.

The 700-R4 will have a 4 pin electrical connector and a TV cable.

The 4L60E will have a multi-pin electrical connector (13 pins maybe?, not sure) and no TV cable.

Re: 4L60E Conversion

If you want a 2WD 4L60E look for an F-Body (93-97 Camaro/Firebird), a B-Body (1994-97 Caprice/Roadmaster wagon) or a full size 2WD truck (1993-97) and make sure it has a "K" in the bell housing casing on the drivers side-it designates a HD version and that's the one you want to build. With a good improver kit like TransGo, extra 1-2 and 2-3 clutches and a 32 element HD sprag, you can build one to easily handle up to 800 HP.

Re: 4L60E Conversion

So an 02 Silverado tranny wouldn't work?
Just asking for reference. That's probably the combo I would use if getting engine and trans at the same time.

Re: 4L60E Conversion

Honestly if you can pull your trans i would have it rebuild and put it back in yourself. Most trans shops if you drop off a trans and pick it up its 500 bucks or so.If you try using the ls trans on a small block your gonna spend close to that in parts like a torque convertor and other stuff to pretty much throw away when you swap in the ls.And with a fresh rebuilt 700r4 you can sell it once you swap in your ls and get a few bucks back.

Re: 4L60E Conversion

That's good advice. Never thought about it that way. To be honest it may have something to do with the kickdown linkage too. 2 people tried messing with it and have been unsuccessful. The truck had a TH350 and I swapped in the 700r4. It has a very long shift and will not shift into OD at times.

Re: 4L60E Conversion

To adjust the TV (throttle valve) cable on a 700R4, you must have full unimpeded pedal travel, and using the correct bracket for your carb, rachtet the cable so it fully seats and push the ratchet release lever down. Then using only your foot feed pedal, slowly depress the pedal all the way to the floor-this automatically adjusts your cable.

Re: 4L60E Conversion

had the same problem with 700r4 in my 86 Buick Regal build(406 sbc, 700r4, 2500 stall, 3.73 rearend)....that trans lasted 4 years and drove it on 3 Power Tours after the 3rd one it started have adjustment issues and I finally lost 3rd gear......so to find a better way to adjust and operate the kickdown I bought this........http://www.tciauto.com/tc/tcir-tv-ca...ml/.......what I had was this..........
http://www.autozone.com/1/products/4....html......the tci was suggested by some fellow cars guys in my area as specifically made for my carb set up over the generic bracket that I had installed.....im fixing to have that 700r4 rebuilt to re-install into my Regal.......its been on the back burner since I started concentrating on my 87 GMC build........

I believe the carb be might the problem. Years ago I had a 700R4 and put a Holley carb on and hooked up the TV cable. It wouldn't shift right no matter how much I adjusted the TV cable. Put the Qjet back on and it shifted fine. I believe it has something to do with the radius.

You don't think it had anything to do with the TV cable bracket?

Not the bracket that holds the cable steady. Where it hooks to the carb and the geometry it makes is very important. Maybe this will help.

Re: 4L60E Conversion

I have a 700R4 in my truck. I got rid of the computer and went with a standard HEI and Edelbrock carb. What do I need to do to hook up the trans so the converter will go into lockup?
