VIN Number Location??

I have an 80s C10 frame under a 77 cab that i am starting to put together. Does anyone know where the frame VIN number is located on an 80s frame?

Re: VIN Number Location??

Passenger frame rail on top near the front cab mount. But that number won't be the exact VIN on the dash. The frame VIN should have the model year and plant code, followed by only the sequential portion (last 6 digits) of the VIN. The 6 digits on the frame should match the last 6 of the VIN on the cab.

Re: VIN Number Location??

The Vin on the cab is in the door jamb that goes with the title. The truck was wrecked and the frame was badly bent in front so i bought a frame from the wrecking yard for two bills delivered. I need to know what year the frame is? I need a steering box and am not sure if i can use any year from 73-87?

Re: VIN Number Location??

The frame VIN should have the model year and plant code, followed by only the sequential portion (last 6 digits) of the VIN.

So using the chart below: GFXXXXXX = 1986 MY - built in Flint

Code Year Code Year Code Year Code Year Code Year Code Year
A = 1980 L = 1990 Y = 2000 A = 2010 L = 2020 Y = 2030
B = 1981 M = 1991 1 = 2001 B = 2011 M = 2021 1 = 2031
C = 1982 N = 1992 2 = 2002 C = 2012 N = 2022 2 = 2032
D = 1983 P = 1993 3 = 2003 D = 2013 P = 2023 3 = 2033
E = 1984 R = 1994 4 = 2004 E = 2014 R = 2024 4 = 2034
F = 1985 S = 1995 5 = 2005 F = 2015 S = 2025 5 = 2035
G = 1986 T = 1996 6 = 2006 G = 2016 T = 2026 6 = 2036
H = 1987 V = 1997 7 = 2007 H = 2017 V = 2027 7 = 2037
J = 1988 W = 1998 8 = 2008 J = 2018 W = 2028 8 = 2038
K = 1989 X = 1999 9 = 2009 K = 2019 X = 2029 9 = 2039

Re: VIN Number Location??

The proportioning valve is there but the lines to the master cylinder were cut by the lazy bums at the wrecking yard or someone who took the steering box. There are lines going to the back. I still havent found the VIN #. My 75 has it on the top of the frame rail by the motor mount, pass side. But this is a newer frame. 81 up. I will be buying a steering box soon but not sure what year to get?

Re: VIN Number Location??

They ran two steering boxes 73-79 then 80-87 only thing different is the 80 and newer used metric fittings on the ends of the power steering lines at the box.And the 2wd and 4x4 boxes are different also.Easy way to tell is look at the pitman arm if it has a big nut on the end its 2wd,If it has a bolt on the side of the pitman arm and has a slit in the pitman arm its 4x4.

karl: The frame itself has a number. Picture below shows the "323" frame which is a 77 Shortbed Frame. It is right below the drivers seat on the outside of the frame. Big letters. If you get that number there should a reference somewhere to tell the year in the model. Hope picture come out OK. Larry
