S10 hitch for 55-59 trucks?
I was looking around for vehicles with a 34" frame width.
I know the Chevy Venture hitch works on a TF truck, but I wanted something rated heavier. The Crown Victoria hitch is a maybe, I know the front section is the same width as a TF but not sure about the rear. The S10, I think, has the same rear frame width -- anyone looked at it any closer? Would be nice to put at least a 7500 lb hitch on the truck.

Re: S10 hitch for 55-59 trucks?
Use the U Haul receiver for the Chevy Venture and add side plates to mount it to the sides of the frame and add a tube going forward to a second cross member that is also plated to the sides of the frame rails.
This will spread the load over a longer portion of the truck frame. It wouldn't hurt to box the frame rails also. What are you planning to tow that you need this much receiver for ?

Re: S10 hitch for 55-59 trucks?
I found a used Draw Tite Class 3 that mounts to the bottom of the frame. Rear most bolts were ok but front a problem. I just welded on some side plates to distribute the load along the frame. The receiver tucks right under the bumper.

Re: S10 hitch for 55-59 trucks?
That last one comes under the heading of "will handle far more than the truck will".
You still have to stay within what the donor S-10 chassis was rated at for towing and that is probably some where between 3000 and 5500 lbs depending on what year and chassis.

Re: S10 hitch for 55-59 trucks?
Thanks Dan.
To The O.P. The Venture receiver is rated at 3500# with 350# Tongue weight. Besides the TF Frame is not robust enough for a 7500# trailer.

Quote:
I have an '04 Grand Cherokee, rated to 7500 lbs, that I would like to downsize. I'd like to be able to pull a project home, though, which leaves the truck. 3,500# doesn't cut it. 5,000# might but more would obviously be better.

Re: S10 hitch for 55-59 trucks?
Ah ... This could be posable with the additions I mentioned above .
Just be sure the load on the trailer is balanced over the trailer axles.
