Steering column joint u-joint help.
I picked up a steering column from 76 chevy van for my TF rebuild.
Can anyone who has used one of these columns point me towards a u-joint thats compatible with a DD shaft? thank you |

See "How to Determine the Correct Universal Joint Size" here http://www.flamingriver.com/index.php/service/tips.

Re: Steering column joint u-joint help.
Borgsen also has good tutorials and design information. I used a modified astro van column to transition from the column and box splines to DD. Not as pretty as the Borgsen, but plenty stout.

Re: Steering column joint u-joint help.
I had a mid 70's Chevy Van tilt column and that had a 3/4-36 spline...
There are U-joints for 3/4-36 spline to 3/4-DD. But again, that's what I got.

Re: Steering column joint u-joint help.
What are you going to connect it to? What are your plans for the front end ? straight axle? IFS ? power steering?
If your going to keep stock axle , you will need to replace or modify existing steering box. OrrieG has a good example, if you can get the steering shaft to go along with the column that will help a lot. If going w/mustang II may need a double U joint and a support also if I recall right, Someone with a MustII set up can chime in , I'm matching my original column to my Camaro gear box on my Camaro front clip now. I'm using every thing Camaro up to the column then using a 3/4 x3/4 DD U joint I just received off Ebay, real nice quality Beefy piece, and nice $ at $28 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Black-Univer...1b8fc2&vxp=mtr |

Re: Steering column joint u-joint help.
Thanks for the info. After further research I think it is the 3/4 36 spline. But I will count this weekend.
I put in a TCI front end with a manual rack last summer. And like and idiot I skimped on the column. I bought a unit from one of the big websites, that had their name on it($300=/-). It never felt solid, then a week after I got it on the road the tilt mechanism broke. It would pop in and out of position with the smallest amount of pressure. But, I was so excited to have it back on the road, I couldn't let it sit while I figured out the issues. So a year later...I made it to the junkyard and pulled a great column for $65. SO I am finally right-siding that mistake. And with your help, I think I know what joint to get. thank you |
