locking tonneau cover/anti-theft

Guys

My 71 long bed is my daily driver.

I use my bed, but Id like to have a lockable storage so dont have to worry about things walking off.

Ive thought of a tool box, but i think a locking tonneau cover would be better.

problem is even if it locks, if someone wants my stuff, they can just cut through a soft top and get what they want.

I know the pace edwards jackrabbit (for 1000+ bucks) would do what i want, but its $$$$

So i have some questions:

1)Are there soft tops that are lockable?

2)Are the soft tops more than just a "tarp" to where it would take some effort to steal stuff from the bed? or could a knife slash right through it?

3)Do any of you have the folding panel type? Seems like those would be harder to break in to? any feedback?

4)Are there alternatives to the jackrabbit that can had for less money? They make switchblade model for 800, but not for our trucks...just 88 and up

I have a Gaylord fiberglass cover. I did not like them but have had one on my C10 for the last 10 years. It is secure and adds weight to the back which gives a smoother quieter ride.

yes, ive seen the gaylords, but for me and the way i use the truck, a roll up like the jackrabbit is preferred.

just wish i could find something cheaper...

with the jackrabbit, id almost rather just give thieves whatever is the bed vs having them damage the 1100 dollar cover

im about to go cut up a roll up garage door

are there any soft/non metal covers that are lockable/hard to break into?

I have a PVC cover on my Tundra that I like a lot. It wasn't quite 1100 but I'm guessing around 900. I'll get the name of it and post it if you're interested. It's a super nice top. The big disadvantage to those over the folding panels is the fact that you can't ever haul anything over bed height without removing it. But you never have to worry about anything getting wet.

I made my own out of Aluminum. It's 2"x2" aluminum frame, 3 cross ribs for support, sheet aluminum (used for roofing on trailers) and J moulding to tie everything together. I used hood springs from a 1999 Silverado and a flush lockable stainless latch to secure the cover to the tail gate.

that cover is pretty slick, but im always putting big stuff in my bed, so a roll up sorta thing is probably better for me. just curious... how much do you have in that?

are any of the fold up panel types more secure than just the "tarp" kind?

My dad has a fold up bed cover that locks and is pretty secure. I'll try and look up a name. It is hard plastic.

Well I went out and looked at it and I don't see a name on it. You'll lose about a foot of fold up space next to the cab but with an 8 foot bed, you can spare that.

Tonneau covers are fabric, then there are bed covers. A soft top is a cap/canopy/shell/camper/whatever made of fabric. I know some bed cover companies call them tonneaus, and if you Google tonneau you mostly bed covers, but they are wrong. Just keeping language correct so everyone knows what we are talking about.

Lots of lockable bed covers, also called hard covers. For the tonneau look, a hard cover can be covered in vinyl. I've run tonneau covers for years. I made one from marine grade plywood with cross-struts then covered with fabric. I made the tailgate so it locked

I like that foldacover, but again, they dont make it for our trucks

and, it ends up being 800 bucks too.
