OT: honda question

My parents want to get me into an economy box....BOOO!!!! Well, I've been looking at a 93 Honda Prelude. It’s a 2.2 liter 5 speed with 140K miles. Are there any reliability issues with these cars? It has only been driven by a 50 year old mom all its life, and the only reason for selling it is because it is a manual tranny. It’s just had a major service (timing belts and whatnot). Any feedback would be appreciated! Thanks, ken

hi Ken! my aunt had a 1990... wait a minute, it coulda been a 91... well anyway shes had it for a long time and used to drive it from colorado to arizona every year and she still has it. it has a lot of miles and it has only had some routine maintenence done and a starter problem, i forget what it was but it was pretty minor. My mom also has a honda which is a 94 civic and i call it junk because i like trucks but fro a car it runs strong and is very reliable.

Is the 93 the older body style kinda? I was considering getting a Honda Prelude Si. I ALMOST did, but then I found out about Saturn's. Trust me, see if you can't find a 93-95 Saturn SC2. The saturn's are far superior to honda's on many level's. The main point, is the saturn's have timing CHAINS, rather than a timing BELT. A 93-95 SC2 can be had for right around $2000. Don't be scared of miles either, I have 255k on my 93 and it runs like a top!

If it's been taken care of it's just getting broke in at 140k.

I just swapped cars with my wife. Shes a stay at home mom so she's driving my 88 Burb. I'm driving her POS accord with 208,000 miles on it. Gets 29mpg and crusises right along. Not burning any oil that I can tell. Leaks a little. Passes emmsions no problem.

Swaping is saving us about $200 a month in fuel.

Looking at a couple CRX's right now. They wil get 40mpg is you can keep your foot out of them.

Saturn superior to Honda? I don't think so.

(That's why Saturn is now buying Honda V6's to put in the Saturn VUE.) My brother did have a SL2, and it was a decent car, I just wouldn't compare it to a Honda.

Reliability problems with Hondas...maybe windshield wipers.

I have known Accords to go 200K without even needing a timing belt.

Preludes (and most other Hondas )are great reliable cars.

I almost live in Kennesaw. I'm in Marietta off of 5 and New Chastain. I Work in Cartersville. No traffic but a 22 mile drive one way. I do it in half the time it took me to get down to Cumberland where I use to work 12 miles.

Hondas have never had reliability problems. The only major problem in recent history has been the 98+ auto trannies, and that was because an outside contractor made bad bearings that failed. Get the honda. Its all about HONDA.

I know where i might be able to get a good running and driving '94 Toyota Tercel (sp?) for $500. My friend knows a guy selling it. I haven't looked at it yet, but it is kinda beat up supposedly. 4 banger, and sadly an automatic.
Are they decent cars? I'm constantly hearing good things about Toyotas in general, mainly Camarys and Corrollas, but nothing about Tercels. My '72 needs about $500 put into it for a rear end rebuild pretty soon, and i could buy the car for that price, and it gets like 40mpg......sounds like it would make a decent college commuter, which is what i need.

a Tercel is about the most reliable car you can find, mostly for it's simplicity. What is there is built like a tank. $500 is pretty cheap. The downside is you will be driving a Tercel.

Yeah i know....would be quite a difference to go from my '72 Chevy with a built 350 to a Tercel, lol. But, it would be alot cheaper....i could always just tint the windows dark so no one sees me, lol.
I haven't looked at it yet, so it could be a huge POS....

Toyota makes good cars as well. Some guy ran a turcel or a starlet to some unbelivably high miles and still going. Something like a million plus on the engine. I think he lives in my area. It was all over the local news a few years ago.

It took my sister about 12 years to murder her 87 Carolla 4 door with auto. At 280k if spit out the rings. One time she came over because she wanted me to check a couple things including change the bulb for the oil pressure light. It was leaking oil and she used it to deliver pizza's. She was worried it would run low and she would know about it. She also wanted me to figure out what it would take to fix the oil leak.

It wasn't the bulb. Some how the sender wire got unplugged. I also found the oil leak. She had been doing her own oil changes. She changed brands of filters (Told her to quit using frams). Well she was not cleaning the flange so the new oil filter was hitting some dirt and not sealing. So I showed her that and told her to clean that flange.

It was due for a oil change and she lived in an appartment at the time. Always took the car over to my place or my moms to use the garage and ramps. So I take out the drain plug since I'm already filthy from all the oil all over the bottom of the car and nothing came out.

She had been driving it for some undertermind amount of time with no oil. I figured the motor was gone for sure. Nope, she drove the car another 100k.

How much? I dont know of any problems that these Preludes have had.

I love my econobox, CRX. I just got 36mpg out of my last tank of gas. The only problem I forsee is that you will get revved on at every stoplight.

Holy crap dude thats way too much. 140,000miles and $4200? No way. Not even a new body style prelude would get that unless it was only a few years old. I wouldn't pay more then $2500

I saw on a paper somewhere where a guy had a 92 (I thnik)honda accord and it hit 1 1/2 million miles. Couple starters and a rebuilt tranny. + oil & timing belt THATS IT. A volvo also hit 1 million.

the 4th gen preludes had 2 different 2.2L engines available, the DOHC 2.2 VTEC and the SOHC 2.2 non-VTEC. the VTEC motor is fun to drive, 190 hp. make sure it isn't the 4 wheel steer version, they are reliability nightmares.

on of my friends wanted a lude so he shopped for a while and made all of his friends and his gf learn about them while he was. he got a '93 also, it had a rebuilt engine and 130k on the clock for $4500, and it was a steal. I don't think you can find a 4th gen for less, and certainly not a 5th gen. they sold the 5th gens in america until 2001, iirc, and they still command high resale prices.

here is a shot, he riced it out somewhat...lowering coils, shaved emblems, body kit, CAI, shaved license plate from rear decklid, and did the bodywork and repainted it honda red. sold it to his bro for $6500, who promptly blew up the engine.

Id never pay that kinda money for any import that old...Then again I would never buy an import(cept a Chevy from Canada lol)
I had a 86 Oldsmoble Delta 88, only had to change the timing chain around 90K, ran great and got good mileage, no rust, nice interior, sold it for $1200. You can get ones in better condition for under $1000 with under 100K on it.

I would sacrifice gas mileage for a real car any day......

Levis shut down their last US factory, there all made over seas now. What happens when everyone is buying imported stuff? Wonder how many jobs will be lost..............
