Anyone have the original coolant recovery tank for 71-72? Mounting issues (help!)
I bought the dealer installed kit (994230) and am running a test fit. Should mount to the radiator support, above the horn. (pictured). Link is: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/CS...Y=w800-h600-no
First, I don't see how you can mount the bracket of this centered (width) with the radiator support. Not necessarily a problem. Second, if the tank is too high, it hugs the top side of the radiator, and I imagine it would burn up. If it's lower, then the nipple on the bottom of the tank is intermingled with the connector for the wire harness to the horn. The horn only mounts one way. Are the radiators wider on the big blocks? It's not quite the right radiator, and am getting another, but I don't think that's the problem. The widest part of this radiator is 34 1/2". I know the core support bushings are bad, but can't imagine that's it.

Here's a picture of a factory installed. Bracket may be different, never confirmed. The bottle is the same.

Re: Anyone have the original coolant recovery tank for 71-72? Mounting issues (help!
It's a tight fit. The mounting bracket will be off center slightly so you can squeeze the tank in there. It is almost flush against the radiator, the tank will not melt or crack as I have the setup on both my trucks, the one on my 72 has been on there for several years now. I mounted mine based off of pictures shown in various threads here, the one you have posted above is how I did mine.

Tempting to mount a plate for it, but then I mess up the radiator support. That said, I'd be doing that anyway.....Hmmmm

Hey Zep, seems the hose rubs against the horn connect, right? That or real close.
What type of hose are you using? Sorry for all the questions. It's tempting to locate a mounting plate or two straps. Just mount those to the radiator support. The goal is original, but in this case, seems to be an improvement. Same number of bolts on the support. Even fewer if it's one plate. Plus it adds room to get the bottle in. Looks real tight, but I'm guessing. Ever tell you great band? One of favorites to beat the drums to (another hobby). Bonham was amazing, top five at least. His tones were second to none, and time was to a Swiss watch. All Zep musicians were among the best.

Course, there's nothing that says I have to use the bolt pattern on that bracket.
A stiff harness and connector to that horn doesn't help. There's not enough play either. I won't tape up the new electrical like the existing. A different connector on the horn might be an option.

Here are pics of the tank/bracket as I installed it on my 68. You are correct...the hose sits right next to the horn contact/wiring harness. It does not rub on it, but yes a very tight fit. Sorry for the crappy upside-down pic, it is dark here and my cell phone sucks...but you can see it's proximity.

Here is a pic of the tank removed. I off-centered the bracket and used only one upper and one lower attaching point on the core support. It is more than sufficient to hold it in place...bailing wire could do the job, lol. Sorry again for the crappy pic, but you can see what I'm talking about.

Pic showing how close the tank is to the radiator.

I couldn't ask for more than that. Thanks Zep.

Re: Anyone have the original coolant recovery tank for 71-72? Mounting issues (help!
Thanks for the Zep props Obviously my favorite band I agree all were stellar musicians, but I take a special liking to drummers in particular.
My top five list: 1. Neil Peart (perfection) 2. Buddy Rich (OG) 3. Bonzo (of course) 4. Keith Moon (insane) 5. Charlie Watts (Technically not much better than Ringo but I love the Stones and he is a "cornerstone" to the band) The above are just my personal favorites, there are many others...Ginger Baker, Mitch Mitchell, Stewart Copeland, Lars, on and on. Sorry for the sidetrack, hopefully my pics help out

Re: Anyone have the original coolant recovery tank for 71-72? Mounting issues (help!
After my original post concerning, I got into the mood and managed to bust through my bass drum head. Go figure.......It was due.
Top five drummers IMO, no particular order: John Bonham Neil Peart Vinnie Colaiuta Carter Beauford Buddy Rich Little story. Rich's "competition" (but not really) was a guy name Gene Krupa. He also led his own orchestra, which required another drummer. My dad had an orchestra as well, and they used the same drummer. If you're interested, this is one of the few jazz tunes pops wrote. Probably not the same drummer though, because it was a different set of music and musicians. 1956ish. It's a change of pace. http://yourlisten.com/GOULD/the-big-...ads-jazz-tunes

Here's one that has some nice jazz (have to wait for it), but the song is unremarkable beforehand and the lyrics are awful. Funny story. My dad's tune is on the A side of this 45. The 45 sold a bunch, but because of the B side. The B side was a big hit, but my dad didn't write it. Anyway, here's my dad's tune (A side), if you can bare it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=csSETR2L4jw The hit (B side) is called 'Teach Me Tonight". It's obscure, but I like it. It's on Youtube. Maybe I'll post some of the melodies he did. If you like melodies, I think you'd really like his work. Me, I'm a sucker for melodies.

Re: Anyone have the original coolant recovery tank for 71-72? Mounting issues (help!
For the melody lover, here are three consecutive on the same track. IMO, the 2nd and 3rd are super, and bring back a lot of memories. I don't believe he wrote any of these three, just his arrangements. There's about 20 violins here. This was 1969ish, so with today's technology, you could probably get by with 4-5.
http://yourlisten.com/MYMUSICKS/medley-2 Here are a couple off his jazz album. Fletcher Henderson stuff. The drummer I mentioned above is playing. http://yourlisten.com/MYMUSICKS/johnson-rag http://yourlisten.com/MYMUSICKS/blue-fletcher Pops was talented. Skips a generation. But you wouldn't find him under a truck.

Where did you guys find this factory accessory? If anyone has another one of these, I would be interested.
Thanks, Justin |

Post on the parts board, maybe you'll get a hit. They aren't cheap.
