Re: My engine oil leak fix thread. I hope.....

I had time to start installing the engine today. Till I had it hanging on the cheery picker and checked the flex plate. I had over looked the fact it would be different. Thankfully on of the local parts stores had one in stock. So the engine is resting in is new home, without to much trouble. Other than fighting a torn rear transmission mount. I haven't changed out the cross member yet. So a ratchet strap later things are held in place.
I checked my pictures I'm a little short on them. I'm sure I'll find the missing card. But here are a few. The gear box looking nice and clean. Note: don't buy a NAPA steering gear rebuild kit for a Saginaw box. The kit does not come with the top cover metal/O-ring gasket. I had to buy another kit from Rock Auto to get the one gasket to finish the job. NAPA kit price $41.00 Rock Auto $15.00.
The rag joint repair I used the HELP parts line found at most aftermarket stores. There are two sizes and my truck used the large size. Less than $5.00. The slide joint I used some old Dodge truck stuff I had from years ago. It all fit.
Paint I used was from Tractor Supply, Majic brand Enamel. And added catalyst hardner. The stuff is very easy to work with and looks and feels like powder coat.

I had some time to waste so I polished my oil cooler lines. they will look great from underneath the truck.

Re: My engine oil leak fix thread. I hope.....

Forgive me for going way off topic. My true calling, this is what I do now that I'm retired. I restore 2 to 3 older Harley's a year. I'm talking down to bare steel frame and up. In 2006 I was hit while riding and have been crippled up since, unable to continue in my line of work. I was forced to retire, I us two forearm crutches to move around on. I still manage to ride a bit. Nothing like I use to.

In the pictures. (1) is my 1970 FLH Shovelhead and my 1986 C10 Silverado 305,4bbl.,700r4 i sold it. (2) As my 1970 FLH looks today I have changed it up a bit. Its getting ready for a denim blue paint job. (3) 1989 FXRS my Hot Rod has a big bore kit 96 cui EVO, EV13 cam,S&S ignition single fire, V&H propipe, and a long list of cool stuff. Its sold going west next month. (4) What I have bought to replace the FXR a Custom Built 1982 Shovelhead in a Kraft tech frame,200 back tire,6 speed. I will strip it down a bit. To much stuff for my taste.

Well I commend you for not totally giving up, so many people do. Keep up the good work on the truck, I only wish I had the knowledge to do this with my truck. When it comes to the engine and mechanics, I'm kind of ignorant.

Re: My engine oil leak fix thread. I hope.....

I had a chance to work on my truck today, 7:30 am to 11:30 pm. I'm tired but I have done a bunch. Made the brackets for the new transmission cooler, made bracket for the P/S cooler. Polished the new replacement P/S hoses I bought from NAPA. I couldn't believe how nice they came out, looking like chrome. I had made a trip to the Pull-Your-Part mid week to get a couple of different P/S return hard lines for the gear box. Because of the Cooler I needed to change the angle, and bending the original was a complete failure. Kink city.

I don't know what type paint the spray on Hedman Headers, but its a real SOB to get off to repaint with high temp ceramic paint. I ended up using paint stripper to get the last of it off. Hours working on just two headers 16. I sprayed the high temp primer tonight. I will spray the high temp 2000 degree ceramic paint tomorrow and let them bask in the sun the rest of the day. That should cure the paint, my out side thermometer shows on most day 100 degrees plus.

I picked up a New 1998 Tahoe 5.7L starter for project, With Advance Auto have there promo going on giving coupons like 20 dollars off. It was under a $100.00 with a year warranty. I thought about Rock Auto but I don't want to have to wait.

I have decided on going with a completely new A/C system from Vintage Auto Air. So I'm throwing this out there, I'll have a complete system from nuts & bolts to everything under the dash for a 1986 C20 5.7 Silverado for sale shortly. Has a R4 compressor that's good, hard lines, rubber lines, condenser, brackets have been sanded and painted gloss black.

Hope fully Monday I'll start it. I will take a video. I have been taking pictures as I go.

Re: My engine oil leak fix thread. I hope.....

Had some free time to get some work done on my truck. Installed the trans cross member, I still need to drill the new bolt holes. A job for tomorrow. While under the truck I finished removing the rest of the exhaust system. I hated to but it needed two cuts to get everything from under the truck.
While under there I took advantage of the rear leaf spring hanger bolts being clean. I was able to change out the rear shackels with 2 1/2 lowering shackels, using no air tools. Just regular wrenches and 1/2 drive ratchet by hand, I love southern trucks.

I have a fairly nice long wheel base exhaust system with dual tail pipes, if someone wants it. Freebee local only.

Sweet. I need to pull my whole exhaust and refresh it too. That's next on my list. Looking good man!

Re: My engine oil leak fix thread. I hope.....

I haven't updated my engine replacement post in a while. Your thinking why isn't he done by now. Well stuff happens and life gets in the way.
But here is where I'm at as of today. The engine compartment has some dust build up and has lost a bit of its luster, till I can get it outside and wash it.
I'm very close to starting it up and having exhaust installed. Then start the break in period.

I decide to go with TCI transmission, for my 700r4 TCC lockup control parts. I used there valve body kit. And there carb linkage kit(very cool) and dent cable. I also installed a new servo kit, and a throttle valve plunger & sleeve and spring.
Plus a new trans oil pan from Skip White performance. It hold a bit more fluid and has a drain plug.

Re: My engine oil leak fix thread. I hope.....

I know your steering shaft is already in and cleaned up but if you take it back out and look at the top of it where it connects to the firewall there is a small hole and you pump new grease into the top part.

If you take the top coupler off there is a small spring inside that if you bend it outwards again it'll apply more pressure to the coupling resulting in a tighter feel at that location. If you need pictures let me know as I tore it apart.

Re: My engine oil leak fix thread. I hope.....

I drove my truck to the exhaust shop this afternoon, sure took me long enough.
Glad I wasn't in a hurry on this engine job job. I'll get pictures taken and posted tomorrow. Running and non running. I just went to the rear axle and had them dump it there for now. I have mid length Hedman Headers. To a 2 1/2 exhaust system with a H-pipe then into two knock off 40 series flow master mufflers.
With my 700r4 I used TCI transmission parts, as note before.
also testing my new cooling Fan set up. I tried several different styles of electric cooling fans from other makes and models. And didn't come up with anything I was completely comfortable with. So I went with a Flex-a-Lite Dual cooling fan set up with 2 speed adjustment. And build in control module.

I have a short list of small items to wrap up. Then move on to the suspension drop. And then some minor paint work, think of going all one color, but for the top. The major color being Code 66 Dark Brown, then painting to top a light brown/tan with heavy metallic.
