shaved tailgates

Been looking at some trucks to purchase and both had shaved tailgates. When you put the tailgate down but you really cant since there is no chain to keep them up. Then they had the simple door latch pin to lock the tailgate up. What are the options out there but im thinking if I do purchase do go back to original then have to weld the hold up that they put in the bed rail. any ideas to make them look better or go back to original
