looks like a 73-87 stock height spindle. im doing disc brake conversion on my 68 right now using the spindle/rotor/caliper/tre out of a 74 and this looks exactly like the 74 spindles i picked up.

If you are right, see the outer tie rod end? Is that a 73-87 piece?

not sure..looks like it, but i was also looking at the adjustment sleeve and it looks like a stocker. the 73^ tie rod ends are bigger diameter than the 67-70 tie rods and you should use 73-87 outer tie rods and re-purpose the old outers for inners...which means you need a special sleeve that fits the larger 73^ tie rod on one side and the old 67-70 on the other. it thats not what you have, the PO either changed the centerlink to a 73^ (not sure thats possible?) or just reused the 67-70 tierods which dont fit that spindle...

(the 74 Tie rods i got have the grease fitting on top of the "head" of the rod, the old 68's have the grease fitting on the end...)

Re: Help identifying spindle. Pics included!

When you say they don't fit, what makes them not fit? Physically too small? I'm going to the parts store and getting the 73/87 ball joints. Then, if anything else doesn't fit right, I have a friend who has some 73/87 spindles, I'll get those from him and buy the conversion for the tie rods. Figure atleast then I'll know what I have. Thanks for the help!

Re: Help identifying spindle. Pics included!

I think you have stock GM 1971/72 spindles.

I found the part numbers for them online and the number looks to match your top pic:

Quote:
I don't have a numbers book but here are the PN's for the 71-72 Chevy truck spindles.

Left side is 3969461

Right side is 3969462

LH and Rh is cast onto the spindle as well as the casting date. The casting numbers are on the inside of the spindle below the caliper mount.

There are other casting numbers on the spindle but I don't know what they are for.

Jim
71/72 tie rods also have a top mounted zerk.

I have a set of 71 spindles in the garage at home with good casting marks on them, I'll look tonight to make sure those #'s match.

Re: Help identifying spindle. Pics included!

I verified the Part Numbers with a set of 1971 GMC spindles I pulled off an all original truck about 15 years ago and they matched the numbers I had above. The full P/N was stamped on the back side, and on the front side they had "461 L" and "462 R", I guess to identify them easier. The numbers on the front were also way more "legible" than the P/N on the back, but you can definitely make out the 461 and 462.

Re: Help identifying spindle. Pics included!

I'll have to look to verify the numbers on the front, I don't think they match. I have some 71/72 ball joints waiting for me at the parts store now. I'm sure that's what they are. I really thought that's what they were from the beginning. Problem is, I'm positive I have the 67 ball joints in it. Glad nothing bad ever happened having the wrong parts in it. I bet it drives much better now! Thanks for the help!!!
