need dmv help from california owners
a few months back i bought a 70swb. the guy told me that he got it from his buddy and his buddy lost the title but is out of the system. i have tried for months to get the other guys info but have had no luck. i checked with the chp and it`s not stolen and is out of the computer. my question is how do i register this truck in my name? the vin matches on the cab and frame. i don`t want to start dumping money into it if i can`t register it. any help would be great. thanks.

You need the guys info or the guy who sold it to you. call up the DMV and they will tell you what to do, tell them you bought the truck and it's clean. The real owner is nowhere to be found. There is a pink form the real or previous owners sigs and you fill out, it changes the truck over to you. it just like a pink slip but a raw document and fill it out in pen.

If the title is lost, an Application for Duplicate Title (REG 227) must be completed and signed. There is an additional fee of $15 for a duplicate title, and signatures of the legal owner and lienholder must be notarized.(**(( If the vehicle was not purchased from the owner whose name appears on the title, you will need a bill of sale from each in-between buyer. ))))** heres a link http://www.dmv.ca.gov/vr/buyinfo.htm jeff

Or call a title service back east and pay about $150 and be done with it. Cali's DMV has to be the worst. You ask 10 different people a question there, and they will give you 10 different answers.

I agree with 68 suburban. Use a title service if you can find one for 150. The cheapest one I saw was 300. Cali DMV has to be the worst. Once you show up there and try to tell the truth about something they will put you through the hoops. They wont tell you everything you need when you are there. They want to make you come back about 10 times, and each time they will tell you one more thing you need. If you cant find a title service cheap enough buy someones clear title and vin plate.
