Re: LS swap exhaust set up (advice and pictures)

Yes Clyde65, I cut holes in the crossmember and welded in a short section of tubing for the exhaust to pass through. My truck is pretty low so everything is above the bottom of the frame.

I recorded my exhaust on my GoPro but i can't get the file to upload from the computer to this post. When my 12 year old gets home maybe she can help me.

If I can figure out the noise file I will upload it.

Here is a picture of how the exhaust goes through the crossmember.

Re: LS swap exhaust set up (advice and pictures)

Ok
Today I called a shop here in Houston that is well known for there work on our trucks called Dropz R US to see if they also do exhaust work & they said no but they highly recommended a shop nearby (Deer Park Mufflers) so I called them & spoke to the owner & when getting a quote on the job he down talked me having him install an H pipe or even an X pipe he said it's more money for him so if I absolutely wanted it he would do it but he thought it regulated the tone too much & that straight pipes would give me a better muscle car sound.
He pretty much left me speechless so what do you guys think?
When they recommended this guy I was told by Dropz R US that he has been doing this on performance & custom show trucks for more than 30 years.

I hope this link works, this was a good excuse to do this video I have been wanting to do for a while.

Turn your speakers up loud, it begins about 12 seconds in.

Here's the thing, on a show car or a hot rod in which style and perception are key...he's not really "wrong". It IS more money for him, and it DOES cut down on drone. (But on a hot rod, its also acceptable to dump zoomies right out of the hood/side...even on a stock 305.)

On an actual performance vehicle, especially one running a latemodel EFI motor, there is a "technical" advantage to running one. Exhaust scavenging and balancing are real things, and just like choosing the correct pipe size, it has an effect on the vehicles overall performance.

Part of the problem/bias that occurs is where we draw the line of "Right, Wrong, Acceptable, Too Much, Too Little, Loud, Quiet"....these are all things defined by ones personal experience. Can you run a true dual exhaust with no h-pipe, homemade miter cut bends and used mufflers into a great sounding and great running truck? YES, cuz I did. Can you run a fully welded, mandrel bent, h-piped side exit and have it run and sound great? YES, cuz again..I did.

TL;DR
Either works, but one has mathematical calculatible and scientifically proven advantages.

Oh, and I wouldn't use that exhaust guy...I don't like his tone. (pun intended)

Re: LS swap exhaust set up (advice and pictures)

Good thread and opinions by all. I personally like Flowmasters for first Gen small blocks and Magnaflows for the LS stuff. Just my personal preference, but I've tried both and that's where I landed. As far as the length of the tailpipes, they are kinda like my socks, the older I get, the longer they get................. As far as the H pipe, going without it will give you more of a "Hotrod" sound. If you are on the fence about it, I would recommend going without it and if you don't like the sound OR feel you need more HP, have one installed as it's not that difficult to add one in. Just my .02. OBTW Fast&Low, you need to clean out your PM box, .

Re: LS swap exhaust set up (advice and pictures)

I have a Frankenstein for an exhaust system. Was a rush job to get my truck going. I have truck manifolds to 2 1/4" pipe into 3" pipe into flowmaster 44 and out the back by the tailgate and I friggin hate it!! It is way too loud inside and the drone is awful in my cab, so bad that you cannot have a conversation in the truck at certain rpms while driving on the freeway. I am going to have mine redone at some point with Camaro manifolds, 2 1/2 pipe, H pipe, and Magnaflow or dyno. just my experience.

On my 77 I used Camaro manifolds, 2.5" pipes, and Magnaflow.....

Re: LS swap exhaust set up (advice and pictures)

Here's a photo for those who haven't seen the available Hooker 73-87 LS swap exhaust system yet. It all tucks above the bottom of the frame and bolts right in when the Hooker engine brackets and transmission crossmember are used. I actually modified one of these systems and installed it with the Hooker crossmember on my 79' C20 long bed with great results, so it can be used in non-LS swap applications as well.[IMG][/IMG]

Re: LS swap exhaust set up (advice and pictures)

Sorry guy's for the late update.
Well I already had the 2010 Camaro exhaust manifolds so I went with 2 1/2 inch pipe no X pipe or H pipe Super 44's with chrome exhaust tips coming out right in front of the rear tires on both sides.
Yes it's loud & yes I love It
Thank you all for your time and opinions
