Re: How long will it last??? 3 speed saginaw and new 383!!!!

assume its a saginaw...the original 3 on the tree the truck came with as a 6 cyl...bought it with a blown engine, immediately converted to 350 horse 350 and beat the heck out of it for a couple years before i got the muncie (as a homemade half ton tow truck)...guess i drove it a year or 2 behind the big block (ls6 crate motor de-tuned to 9 to 1 ,put the big valves out of the square port heads into a set of ovals...i wanted torque and i guess my tranny explosion proves i succeeded) before the unfinished resto started....but i was afraid to really hammer it after what it did to the muncie

Re: How long will it last??? 3 speed saginaw and new 383!!!!

In 1985 (guided by the engine guy at the garage where I worked) I built the 350 in my truck to an estimated 450 hp (his estimate). I drove it with the Saginaw 3 speed (3 OTT) until around 2002 when I switched to the 700r4.

I drove it like a yougster with 450 hp (smoking all the Mustang GT's) for many years, never any hint of it breaking...it was working fine when I took it out. I think the U joints protected it cause I went through a lot of them.

Re: How long will it last??? 3 speed saginaw and new 383!!!!

Can anyone tell me what rear transmission mount will fit the Saginaw manual 3 speed. The bolt hole pattern is 3 5/8 on the transmission. I have a custom cross member for the body side.

The horsepower numbers are a little different, but the 327 in the Chevy II Novas( l76-365hp and l82-375hp) were ran hard in the drags, on modified motors at that. Those can and we're ran with both saginaw and Muncie 3-4 speeds. The trans outlasted the engines. Also, the 3 speed ran a faster 1/4 than the 4 speed (same driver) in some instances.

They didn't have cross members in trucks. Only in cars etc. I actually built one for mine. The bell housing was the mount and the saginaw just hangs off. Reason for many cracked ears in my opinion I will post a picture of mine later

You have the right trans because the 1965-70 Chevelle equipped with the M22 used the floor shift linkage with a 'T' handle for reverse. No one ever made one for column shift.

It's this one:
