Automatic gear indicator.

New to the forum. Just picked up a '66 GMC stepside long bed yesterday. Originally had a manual transmission but it's been replaced with an automatic. There is no gear indicator on the column though. Any idea of what I need?

Pic would help to see what column you have.

The only way I can post it is via a link.

Re: Automatic gear indicator.

A lot of good information in the FAQ section, but it looks like they just used the OEM manual column? Example of an OEM auto column:

Re: Automatic gear indicator.

No need! Park, neutral, reverse, drive. Every Chevy or such I owned. Never had to look. Same with manual. Except reverse H pattern and VW.

You get use to the count. 1-2-3, nutral, reverse, drive.
The hard part is explaining to a cop why the speedo needle broke off after he herd you 5 miles down the canyon!

I get that. No problem. What I want to know is how to install the indicator.

Re: Automatic gear indicator.

If it's a manual column, no dice!

Re: Automatic gear indicator.

You might be able to use something like this.

https://www.performanceonline.com/St...-3-or-4-Speed/

I guess it depends on what they mean by "universal". It usually means it doesn't fit anything, but with a little ingenuity it could probably made to work.

Re: Automatic gear indicator.

To get an indicator you will need to go to a automatic column. They are a bit hard to find. They do come up in the for sale section but not to often.

Thanks Jimmy. That's what I was looking for. Asking around now. Let me know if you ever get one. Don't need the wheel, just the column.

Re: Automatic gear indicator.

I've used the chrome 63-66 indicator housing on manual columns with success. Fabricated a pointer. Also Ididit and others make universal gear indicators that work on just about any column. Only other option is a factory automatic column, which they are somewhat difficult to find, or a floor shifter.
