Speedometer/Odometer took a dump...

I was driving along and all of a sudden I noticed my speedometer needle bouncing back and forth between 30/70mph non stop. The bouncing back and forth gets worse with greater speeds.

The odometer had rolled over a couple years ago and showed around 6,000 miles. It completely rolled back to zero and stopped working...

Never seen anything like that before.

Any guesses as to what broke before I get the dash out (probably be a couple/few weeks).

Re: Speedometer/Odometer took a dump...

Until I got to the part about the odometer rolling back to zero, I was going to suggest the cable. I had a cable wear at a bend and as it was unwinding the strands the speedo was going crazy.

My guess is the speedo itself is broke. Good Luck

If you haven't already you need to remove the speedo cable assembly, pull the cable out of the sheath, wash the cable with solvent and flush the sheath out with solvent, PB Blaster, or Liquid Wrench, then blow it out with an air hose. Lube the cable with some light oil and put it back together. What you are describing is caused by the cable binding in the sheath. Sometimes it will cause the cable to twist inside the sheath ruining the cable.

Re: Speedometer/Odometer took a dump...

The cable is brand new, well maybe 6 months old.

I know the cable not being lubed can cause the bouncing, but why did my odometer roll back to zero and quit working?

Re: Speedometer/Odometer took a dump...

the cable is the bouncing.even if new needs lube! the odometer is kind of seperate plastic gears that can shear if the speedo cable is whipping as stated. Sounds like a speedo rebuild!

Could be that silly little box on the transmission, I took mine apart and re-greased it after a good cleaning.

Re: Speedometer/Odometer took a dump...

I just redid that too, I put a new gear (same P/N as old gear) and new seal in it, trans is a 700R. The trans fluid lubes that.

buddy of mine has piles of them so I just keep grabbing one from him. I did replace the cable as well because I thought it was the source of my original making a lot of racket but it wasn't. the last one (still in my truck) was working great went about 60 miles and did a big old burnout in a parking lot and it went to heck screaming like a banshee had to pull over and unhook it.
