starter grind after new flexplate installed

I have recently installed new flexplate on my 69 C10 pickup and have had a consistent problem with the starter grinding. Recently I have dropped the tranny to ensure the flexplate is installed correctly, shimmed and unshimmed shimmed again the starter and am completely stumped! The starter seems really tight although running with 2 shims. I wonder if any one has any other insite on what to do next? The starter is a bosch, the engine was pulled on original installation of flexplate.

Do you have the correct knurled shoulder bolts and a starter brace installed?

I used the same ones that came with my truck they are knurled. The original flexplate had 4 broken teeth so replaced it. I can check on specs to see what is required with the starter as the original 4 broken teeth must have been caused by something. If I replace the bolts to get a slightly longer knurled bolt would that help do you think? Thanks for assistance will keep on digging into this issue.

Does the starter need to be shimmed? Did you check the backlash of the jackshaft when you bolted the flex plate on?

No I didn't check that just mounted the new flexplate on and installed seal in transmission.
