Here is the firewall section removed. It appears to have been out, or least mostly removed before. Only 2 spot welds were holding it an I was able to pop them loose with a chisel from behind. Unless I hear differently I am heading to USPS in the morning.

According to Jared the mail wagon driver; they got stuck in the big wagon wheel trenches from previous wagon trains coming around the mountain. They survived on squires and rabbits until some local friendly Indians came along and pulled them out. But then they had to go back to the Indian camp and show their respects to the entire tribe. There was dancing, smoke, and some intoxicating drink.
