eBay and Craigslist posts

I used to love eBay until everyone figured it out. Then it was Craigslist and they limited the ability to search "out of area". But now that they are all easier to search and forum members from every car or truck based website re-posts anything worth looking at, its getting harder and harder to find a good bargain.

My request: Either buy it or let the next guy find it himself, quit making it so friggen easy!!! Just sayin'... Rant over, carry on.

By the way - you are driving up the price of good used parts by doing this.

Price has stayed the same in my area. The occasional guy who talks about how much its worth when its done since he saw it on tv. But I havent seen too much of a difference.

It's not just parts, it's also the trucks themselves and I don't think it has as much to do with us "sharing" the posts as it does supply and demand. The 67-72's were the darlings for a long time but now that they are about dried up people have migrated to the squares and the 60-66's.

Re: eBay and Craigslist posts

that last round of crushing a year back when scrap was high, really put the cramp on stuff around here.. all the "cheap" unwanted stuff went to the crusher. I would say there were around ten serious full time guys that would knock on doors and run ads specifically targeting older stuff , because it was heavy and worth more.
any way the only stuff left now is owned by people who "know what it is worth", so it is expensive.

It may just be because these trucks are getting older? I dunno, but for you guys who don't pay attention to the AD's (47-54.) Those trucks have gone up much more than the 60-66.
I bought two about 5 years ago. One for $300 and one for $500. Same truck today will bring $2,500 to $3,000

I had that problem last year, all I could remember was AD trucks being in the $200 range, and I wanted to find one to pirate the straight axle and springs for my 52 chevy gasser..no such luck, all the ones advertised were in the 2-4K range...

Re: eBay and Craigslist posts

Of course we're partly to blame, but I see no reason to not point fellow members to CL deals.
I mean: Somebody is going to buy it. Might as well be someone here.

Re: eBay and Craigslist posts

Couldn't have said it any better.......its also known as the thrill of the hunt and the success of the buy. You want it bad enough hunt it down and buy it. It's not getting any cheaper. A good way to look at it is the more the price for parts goes up the more your truck is worth. Its an investment either in your past memories or your future pocket. I have previously owned more than 60 cars made between the early sixies to late seventies......used as daily drivers because I couldn't afford better. If I had what those cars are worth today I would be a multi-millionaire. It is what it is. Suck it up and hunt harder

Re: eBay and Craigslist posts

It gets annoying when the ebay and Craigslist posts clog up the board. There should be a separate section in the classified sections for them.

Try posting that idea in the "site feedback" area of the forum. Could be others have the same opinion and it could come about.

Re: eBay and Craigslist posts

I think the market is rising for a few reasons. 1) have you priced a tri five car lately? or a camaro, nova, falcon, or any car for that matter? Trucks are really affordable by those standards. 2) really good stuff is getting harder to find. I was talking to someone at SEMA and they said they get 3-5x more money selling to a east coast guy than a west coast guy.for this reason. Me, I sell it the same across the board.

Re: eBay and Craigslist posts

The age and rarity doesn't seem to be increasing the value of these old trucks as much as the insane TV show prices, auction coverage, big spenders with no budget etc. I've only been buying/selling classic GM's (only 'pre-72 trucks) for roughly 16 years now and the deals I find aren't much different than before. There's a bit of inflation of course, but the ones that are asking insane amounts for them still sit on CL or ebay for a long time. I know trucks locally that have been for sale for years now, but I also know if they were back east they would've sold same day lol Or if their location public they'd be hunted down lol

These over priced rust buckets aren't selling as fast as they seem, but now those cheap good trucks that were plentiful are selling really fast as guys try to flip them to non-enthusiasts. I don't mind the guys who hit the back roads and try to find trucks to build or buy a few at a time and sell the others off to build the one etc. Those are guys doing what they can to keep costs down and build a dream of theirs. Unfortunately there's too many guys out there going out buying the $200-1000 trucks which are normal priced and listing them the same day for $2000-8000 over what they are worth. That's ruining it for guys who are true enthusiasts and builders who appreciate the old iron and searching for these trucks online or in person.

I've always made sure when I bought something it was cheap enough that I could play with it, enjoy it and then sell it to recoup my costs and make a little extra yet still be below the average retail value and sell something at a good price to the next enthusiast that they'd be happy with paying. I've never ripped anybody off to make a buck like some of the classic curbers I see these days, and it's sad to see the prices some people actually pay for these things because they don't do their own research. When I see these middlemen buying low and trying to rip people off, I'm always happy when I see they aren't selling stuff due to their insane prices. There's a difference between the guys like Frank in Olympia and others who've done this all their life as an actual career buying/selling/parts classics vs the guys jumping into this within the last 5 years trying to make bank on the curtails of TV shows etc. I appreciate real enthusiasts, not the curbers in this industry/hobby.

I do enjoy the search and trying to get that truck before somebody else finds that great deal. I don't mind a good share, but I also prefer the deals be hidden and if you want a truck you better spend the hours researching and trying to find the best deal possible. These boards and online search engines do open up the local pickings to out of towners, but luckily most stay within their area and don't venture to far. I stay within a 10hr drive for buying/selling trucks. Anymore than that and it's usually not worth it.

Sorry I went off on a tangent there lol End of my rant on the current conditions these days haha

Re: eBay and Craigslist posts

Well, here's the thing. You guys have some good points on both sides.

The truck I drive was bought by my grandfather back in 67, and I have a lot of history with this truck. I'm only 30, but would love to have another truck.
That being said, it's true that many people who are not enthusiasts are starting to go "hey, this is old! it must be worth some bucks!" (case in point : http://fortcollins.craigslist.org/cto/5313334587.html)

I like that I get to see some examples of strange, cool, or awesome rigs here. It certainly doesn't hurt to post something to help a member out. In my mind, better to have a member who appreciates these truck or may need something to complete a truck, than to have it fall into the hands of someone who wants to "flip" a truck and sell it for some ridiculous profit.

end rant.

^^^^ This is very true. I've also noticed now that scrap is way down, I'm starting to see $300-400 cars and trucks on CL again although not necessarily older stuff. A few years ago anything with a radiator and a battery would bring that or more at the scrap yard.

Re: eBay and Craigslist posts

I was just browsing CL last night not being specific about what I was looking for and found 4-5 53-54 trucks for not much over $500 and a few of the bigger 1 1/2 ton models going for way too much like $5K. I would buy stuff like that if I could fit in those trucks, only the 58 and up models have enough legroom for me. For me no point buying it if I cant at least drive it once before I sell it.
