Tank swap question

I am looking at moving the tank out of the cab. I am doing a ground up restoration on a 1969 GMC C1500. I have been searching threads on this subject, but what I am seeing is using a 1969 Camero on Chevy trucks with coil springs. My truck has leaf springs. My question is will the Camero tank clear the leaf spring mounts? I really don't want to use a suburban tank if I don't have to, I would rather not cut holes in my bed. Has anyone put a Camero tank on a truck with leaf springs? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Tank swap question

I'm doing the camaro swap right now and the way it sits against the frame, I think your leaf mounts would be in the way.

Some people have also used the Nova tank. Not sure off the top of my head if it fits between the frame rails or not.

Re: Tank swap question

I think it would be easy enough to have a fender well filler with a Blazer/Suburban tank.

Re: Tank swap question

I've been doing some serious internet searching and I found a gas tank from a 1974 Impala. Measurements are L-33 3/4 X W-31 3/4 X D-9 3/8. I have 34 inches on the frame rails from outside to outside. I would have to do some serious revamping on the fill spout though. But I would be able to fill through the license plate. Also a bonus is that its a 26 gallon tank which would be nice since I'm going to be feeding a 454. I found it at Rock Auto, part #GM40M. Would you guys mind taking a look at it and give me your opinion as to weather or not I could possibly make this work? The main issue I could see is how low it may hang.

Re: Tank swap question

Not to sound too nit picky... but if you're doing a "ground up restoration" why move the tank out of the cab?

Or just fixing up a cool truck??

I am going to move the tank under the bed of my '72 and use either a first gen Camaro tank or a '70 A-body tank. That way I can tuck it up closer to the frame.

Re: Tank swap question

I'm doing a frame off ground up rebuild, but I do want to add a few custom touches. I want to move the tank out of the cab to get a little more room and to get rid of the gas smell. Other changes I am making are going to be a bigger engine (454), getting rid of the three on the tree ( going to a four speed on the floor), bucket seats, cowl induction hood, and what ever else that I run across that excites me. I've started at the back and am working my way forward. So far I've sandblasted and painted the frame, sandblasted and painted the springs and replaced the spring bushings and shackles and center pins, I just finished going thru the rearend , replaced all of the seals, checked ring and pinion gear, replaced the crush sleeve. Installed wheel cylinders and new brake hardware, shoes and drums. So now I'm into a fuel tank. I'm 90 % sure that I can make this work but I would like to get a few outside opinions.

I bought a 20 gallon steel tank from CPP and I couldn't be more happy with the way it fits

Re: Tank swap question

I've been looking at the CCP tanks, but what I'm trying to avoid is putting a hole in the bed. If I can't find anything else this is definitely the way I will go.
Was is easy to install? How was the price?

Re: Tank swap question

I went through this as many other here , my number one reason moving the tank was for safety ,being my truck will be a daily driver. so when I started looking for a tank ,I made a list of what I wanted ,my number one thing was to find a tank that did not hang low , my 2d was to find a tank at least the same size gallon wise , my 3d was to have versatility like if I ever want to go with EFI ,and last was my filling point .

I ended up with a 20 gal 70-73 mustang tank , it does not hang low ,I can go with a electric fuel pump if ever needed , and the angle of the fuel fill hole gives me a lot of room to figure out were I want my filler point to be ,

I believe they might have a side fill also?

It was incredibly easy to install. There are two flanges welded to the sides of the tank and then there two separate strips that have nuts welded on them.

You just need to mock everything up (so you know where to drill holes), drill your holes and then sandwich the frame between the tank and the strips, before bolting it all together. No other straps or brackets to worry about

After holes were drilled, it took me less than 10 minutes to install

I bought it off of their Ebay store (this is the steel tank) and thought the price was great, but everyone has a different budget
