Stock windshield tougher than new aftermarket?
I have the original wind shield in my 71. It does not have a peck in it but a litte "smokiness" on the very edges due to delamination over the years. I am thinking about replacing with new but am afraid an aftermarket would be more fragile. Would it?

I have replaced several and I haven't broken one yet.

Go to any good glass shop and you should be fine.

Re: Stock windshield tougher than new aftermarket?
-
I have installed 6 or 7 of the aftermarket windshields with no problems. The first one being in '04 and the last one last summer in the '67 Panel Truck. I had one that had a small spot in it that looked distorted but it was toward the top in the center. The only time I noticed it was when I was looking up towards the mirror. LockDoc

Re: Stock windshield tougher than new aftermarket?
I speak from experience, as I owned a glass shop for years. In the late 1970s manufacturers began to reduce the thickness of glass as a means of reducing weight and thereby improving fuel mileage. Look at the thickness of your door glass on your truck and compare it to the door glass on a newer vehicle. The same thing happened with the windshield. The difference is that the door glass is tempered glass, so it is very resistant to impacts. The windshield is laminated glass, which is made of two pieces of float glass (the type of glass in your house windows) laminated together with a plastic layer between them.
Since the glass is thinner, it will break more easily than the stock windshields did. It used to be you could get original-thickness glass from PPG, but I don't know if that's true anymore. |

Re: Stock windshield tougher than new aftermarket?
I wouldn't know since I don't go around breaking windshields . I do know there are replacement quality windshields and there are restoration quality windshields. The cheap ones are not as thick as OEM and will not seal well

Re: Stock windshield tougher than new aftermarket?
The biggest hurdle I've seen are the seals. Search the site well before replacing your own windshield. Even the high end shop I used broke 2 until they found the right brand of seal, which sadly I forget, but it's been discussed at length here.
Still finding little pieces now and then.... always will, I bet.
