The dreaded backspace question.. But different

I have read through all the searches I could and found a lot of useful info.. What j didn't didn't find were pics from the back end to show the wheels position in relation to the fender or bedside, and I would also like to see some from underneath to see how close the wheel is to the wheel tub .. I have a 72 dropped 5/7 and from reading on here that with the wide rear I need a 5.5 backspace on a 20x10 and a 5.25 on a 20x8.5. I want to run 255/40 and 295/40 tires.. Will I be able to get .25 less backspace with that wide of tire in the rear? I read that a 5.25 backspace would work buy the truck owner ran a 275/35 tire.. Would really like to see some pics of the above stated..

Why not get out a tape measure and measure back 5.5" from the face of the brake drum?
This will tell you exactly where the wheel will be.

Just remember,... Wheels advertised width is measured from the bead surface.
Wheels outside to outside measurement is approximately 1" wider.
So for your 20 X 10 allow 11" for the wheel width.

Measure both sides of the truck, because there might be some slight differences.
Also remove the wheels with the trucks weight resting on jack stands to duplicate ride height, not with the wheels hanging.

Re: The dreaded backspace question.. But different

I did some measuring today with two old steel rally's and my rear was about 1/2 off center. I feel a little better about my wheel backspace choice now but worried a little about tire size..
